NOTABLES: Along with Novi Detroit Catholic Central, the Yellowjackets are the cream of the crop in Oakland County and Avondale is a serious contender for the D-2 state crown this season with several big-meet performers and four stellar relays; most of this team’s key athletes are seniors, so if this team is to win  it all, it will likely to be this season; this team has exceptional depth, with 11 current seniors being all-state, a school record holder, a league or regional champion last season.

Auburn Hills Oakland Christian

HEAD COACH: Chuck Snyder, seventh season.

LEAGUE: MIAC.

REGIONAL: Sixth at Division 4 Webberville regional.

COUNTY: 36th (one points).

STATE: Tied-42nd at Division 4 state finals (four points).

HURDLES: Brent Kostich, sr.(state qualifier in both hurdles races last season).

KEY LOSSES: Mitchell Dale (state qualifier in 1,600 and 3,200).

NOTABLES: This team is small in numbers, but has two athletes that could shine in Division 4; if the Lancers can have a few more athletes develop out of the pack, then this team could climb the MIAC ranks; two years ago, Oakland was top-10 in the state in Division 4.

KEY LOSSES: Jordon Garrison (high jump); Branton Dennis (middle distance);Mike Inch (distance).

NOTABLES: The Wolves suffered through a major rebuilding year last spring, which was coupled with numerous injuries; this season the Wolves are primed for a comeback year.

Lake Orion

HEAD COACH: Stan Ford, ninth season.

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 4-0-1, 4-0-1 OAA Red Division (second overall).

LEAGUE: Second at OAA Red Division meet (97 points).

REGIONAL: Third at Division 1 Ortonville Brandon regional (91 points).

COUNTY: 14th (18 points).

STATE: 28th at Division 1 state finals (seven points).

SPRINTS: Danny Ney, sr. (injured last season); KJ Ester, sr.; Corey Ester, fr.; Austin Arnold, fr.; Nick Balavich, jr.

JUMPS: Taylor Joengkriejg, sr.

KEY LOSSES: Nathan Ziolko (all-state in 3,200); Sean Bone (all-state in 1,600; Michigan).

NOTABLES: The Dragons were just of the pace at the league meet and regional and lost a pair of all-state distance runners, but return a bulk of their team elsewhere and should be a team that could make a run at a league and regional and finish top-10 at the county; Lake Orion may be young in certain events, but that bodes well for the future; this team could be one of the best in Oakland County this year and even better the next two years.

Oxford

HEAD COACH: Bob Blunk, first season.

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 7-2, 7-2 Flint Metro League (third overall).

LEAGUE: Third at Flint Metro League (116 points).

LONG DISTANCE: Dylan Smith, sr.; Shane Kerbelis, sr.; Alec Smith, sr.; Ryan Gillespie, soph.

THROWS: Sir Ralph Rodriguez, sr. (runner up in Oakland County Indoor in 2011;

Collin Goetz, jr. (Oakland County Indoor Champion in 2011); Prescott Line, jr.; Ken Coffman, sr.

JUMPS: Cody Westmoreland, jr. (pole vault Oakland County Indoor Champion in 2011); Chris Sachs, soph. (long jump).

KEY LOSSES: Chris Rolle (all-state in 200; county, league, regional champ in 100 and 200 dashes); Austin Westmoreland (state qualifier in pole vault); Mike Cynowa (sprints; state qualifier in 800 relay).

NOTABLES: Oxford is coming off its best season since the early 1990s, when they were a state powerhouse, and there’s plenty of reason to believe that the Wildcats can’t be as good or better; expect this team, under new coach Bob Blunk, who coached for 33 years at Warren DeLaSalle, to challenge in its new digs, the OAA White Division, and for a regional crown; also look for a top-five finish at the county meet as well; look for the Wildcats to dominate in the league in throws and to put together four quality relays; also look for Stuk to be one of the state’s top hurdlers.

LEADERS: Rochester Stoney Creek's Eli Nasr (center) should be amongst the area's best this season in the 1,600 meters. File Photo | Dan Stickradt

Rochester

HEAD COACH: Gary Cousino, fourth season

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 3-2, 3-2 OAA Red Division,

LEAGUE: Fourth at OAA-Red league meet (70 points).

REGIONAL: 13th at West Bloomfield regional (21.5 points).

COUNTY: 32nd at county (3.5 points).

STATE: Did not score.

SPRINTS: Luca Catraro, sr.; John Pitts, sr.

HURDLES: Elive Linkine, sr.; Mike Bowery, sr.

MIDDLE DISTANCE: Brian Beecher, sr.; David French, sr.

LONG DISTANCE: Blake Pozolo, soph.; Mike Maywood, soph.; Aaron Walker, sr.; Jackson Gilbert, sr.

THROWS: Marcel Johnson, sr.; Nick Breuwer, sr.

JUMPS: Dan Nguyen, sr. (high jump); T.J. Dean, jr. long jump); Tanner Ellsworth, jr. (high jump).

KEY LOSSES: Grant Chenoweth, sr. (throws, injured); Josh Meier, (state qualifier hurdler); Brandon Tyus, jr. (transferred out of area; state qualifier in 200); Nick Davis (throws).

NOTABLES: The Falcons have a rare 25 seniors on the roster and a group that is dedicated, but do the Falcons have enough to challenge for a league title? The team, with close to 80 participants, is senior-freshmen heavy with very few juniors, so the Falcons will dip next season; there are 5-6 athletes who could emerge as state qualifiers.

Rochester Adams

HEAD COACH: Eric Lohr, second season.

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 2-3, 2-3 OAA Red Division

LEAGUE: Sixth at OAA-Red league meet (48.5) points).

REGIONAL: Ninth at Division 1 Ortonville Brandon (29.66 points).

COUNTY: 33rd (two points).

STATE: Did not score.

SPRINTS: Avery Taylor, soph. 100-400; Randall McAdory, jr.; Michael Owusu, sr.; Darrian Bell, sr.

HURDLES: Ben Holett, sr.; Aaron Moore, jr.

MIDDLE DISTANCE: Adam Boike, jr.; Quinton Mack, fr. (national AAU champ in 800 as eighth grader); Dylan Oppenhauser, jr.

LONG DISTANCE: Steven Biebelhausen, soph.

THROWS: Grant Brohas, jr.

JUMPS: Aaron Moore, jr.

KEY LOSSES: Cam Bruce, jr. (distance, moved out east); Luke Nicholaou (jumps); Dan Park (hurdles-sprints).

NOTABLES: The Highlanders were top-10 at the state meet in both 2008 and 2009 with several top-flight athletes, but dropped off a bit last season in a rebuilding year; the good thing about Adams is that over 90 percent of the point scorers are back and this team is again on the rise; watch for Adams to produce in the hurdles and sprints with some up and coming distance runners to come through by season’s end; this team likely won’t win a league or region, but will definitely be in the top half.

Rochester Stoney Creek

HEAD COACH: Paul Duffy, first season.

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 1-3-1, 1-3-1 OAA White Division.

LEAGUE: Fourth at OAA White Division league meet.

REGIONAL: Eighth at Division 1 Ortonville Brandon regional (32 points).

COUNTY: Tied for 36th (one point).

STATE: Did not score.

HURDLES: Devon Guinn, soph.

MIDDLE DISTANCE: Chris Tvistse, soph.

LONG DISTANCE: Brenden Townsend, soph. (transfer from Ohio); Austin Tretheway, sr.; Eli Nasr, jr.; Matt Rolain, jr.; Michel Reckling, sr.

THROWS: Michael Eldridge, jr.

KEY LOSSES: Conner Wildren (distance; state qualifier in 3,200 relay); Evan Clark (distance; state qualifier in 3,200 relay); Brian Krause (distance; state qualifier in 3,200 relay)

NOTABLES: Despite losing three-fourths of its state-qualifying 3,200-meter relay, the Cougars may be even better in the distances this season and a better team overall with several up-and-coming athletes, most which are not seniors; this team will improve this season and be even better next year.

THE NEED FOR SPEED: Auburn Hills Avondale'sTakemi Smith (left) and Travon Salter are two of the many top-flight sprinters in the Yellowjackets' lineup that will push them to great success this season. File Photo | Dan Stickradt

Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest

HEAD COACH: Randy Tyler, fifth season.

LEAGUE: Fourth at MIAC league meet.

REGIONAL: Eighth at Division 4 Webberville regional.

COUNTY: Did not score.

STATE: Did not score.

SPRINTS: Matt Gapski, jr. (400-800, relays); Alex Irwin, jr. (400-800, relays); Ryan Joseph (state qualifier 1,600 relay).

HURDLES: Zach Friedel, sr. (long jump; hurdles, state qualifiers 1,600 relay).

MIDDLE/LONG DISTANCE: Nate Nimtz, sr. (800-1,600-3,200); Nathan Stolzenfeld, sr. (1,600-3,200; state qualifier in cross country);

JUMPS: Ryan Joseph, sr. (high jump); 100-200); Stephen Ennis, fr. (long jump).

NOTABLES: Numbers have climbed from 12 athletes last year to 22 this year, which alone will help the Crusaders become more competitive in dual meets and at small-school invitationals; there is a solid senior class plus some promising newcomers; this could be one of the area’s most improved teams this season and 4-05 individuals that could earn a state finals pass.

Troy

HEAD COACH: Eric Plowse, sixth season.

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 1-4, 1-4 OAA Red Division (fourth overall).

LEAGUE: Third at OAA-Red league meet (892 points).

REGIONAL: Second at Division 1 Warren Mott regional (90 points).

COUNTY: 12th (18 points).

STATE: 41st at Division 1 state finals (four points).

SPRINTS: James McDonald, sr.; Chris Wheeler, sr.

HURDLES: John Schmidt, sr.

MIDDLE DISTANCE: Eric Robertson, jr.(state qualifier in 3,200 realy);

LONG DISTANCE: William Yau,jr.; Dillon Jaghory,jr.

THROWS: Corey Meyer, sr. (league champ in discus); Chris Wheeler (throws).

KEY LOSSES: Mike Atchoo (distance, Stanford); Chris Mooradian (jumps, sprints); Brian Murphy (distance):James Yau (all-state in 1,600; now at Michigan); Paul Bolohan (middle distance; state qualifier in 3,200 relay); Wilson Pines (middle distance).

NOTABLES: There are 112 athletes on the roster, which alone will help the Colts in dual meets; while the Colts do have some front-tier athletes, they must replace several that graduated; there are still several unknowns in the lineup that hope to make their marks this season.

Troy Athens

HEAD COACH: John Epple

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 1-4, 1-4 OAA Blue Division (fifth overall).

LEAGUE: Fifth at OA Blue Division league meet.

REGIONAL: 10th at Division 1 Warren Mott regional.

COUNTY: Did not score.

STATE: Did not score.

SPRINTS: Sam Ward, sr.; Chris Churay, sr.

HURDLES: Evan Carpenter, sr.

MIDDLE DISTANCE: Josh Krolik, jr.; Justin Krolik, jr.

LONG DISTANCE: J.D. Sterba, sr.; Brandon Wernette, jr.

JUMPS: Evan Carpenter, sr.; Sam Ward, sr.

NOTABLES: The Red Hawks may not have talent-laden squad as they had during the 1990s, but there is a small score of athletes that should shine in individual events at larger meets; do the Red Hawks have enough depth to move up in the OAA-Blue and will the younger athletes mature enough to make this team more competitive?
