BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Athens blasts Oxford; Oakland Christian sweeps Roeper
OXFORD — With two outs and nobody on base, Athens went on to score nine runs in the top of the first inning and that set the stage for a 16-7 victory over host Oxford in OAA Red Division baseball play.
Ira Land went 4-for-5 with a double, scored three runs and had five RBI to lead Athens (5-1, 3-0). David Mandziara went 3-for-4 with scored twice and drove in two runs.
Alex Harrison earned the win by striking out five in three innings of work while giving up only five hits. Anthony Carrillo pitched the final four innings in relief, striking out seven.
Colin McGeen finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI for Oxford (2-8, 0-5).
AUBURN HILLS OAKLAND CHRISTIAN 12-7, BIRMINGHAM ROEPER 2-2: Wins were hard to come by last season for Oakland Christian, as the Lancers only won three ballgames.
Oakland Christian picked up a pair in one day Saturday in MIAC play.
Josh Crane pitched five innings in Game 1, giving up only two runs, and Mark Levon was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
In the second game, Luke Combs through a complete game with 11 strikeouts and also helped his own cause by going 3-for-4 with three RBI at the plate. Austin Puckett contributed three RBI on the day for the Lancers (2-2, 2-2).
