ANN ARBOR, Mich. Michael Coriasso (72, 72) and Phil Gieseker (73, 71) each shot 2-over-par scores of 144 to lead the Oakland University men’s golf team on day one of the Wolverine Intercollegiate at the U-M Golf Course (Par 71, 6,687 yards) on Monday.

“Whenever you have to count an 80, it really hurts a team’s ability to be competitive, especially with a field like this one,” said OU coach Russ Cunningham. “There were far too many careless mistakes and missed opportunities, but as (Basketball) Coach (Greg) Kampe says, ‘Win the day’ and that is what we will try to do tomorrow.”

Led by Joel Stalter’s course record tying 63 (-8), California leads after 36 holes with 556 (-12). Michigan State is five shots back (561/-7), Baylor is third (562/-6), Michigan fourth (568/E) and North Carolina is fifth (573/+5) to close out the top five. The Golden Grizzlies improved seven shots in the second round and is currently in 11th place with an overall score of 597 (+29).

Stalter holds a three-shot lead heading in to the final round after shooting the course record in the second round and tallied a score of 135 (-7) in 36 holes. MSU’s Dan Ellis carded a pair of sub-par rounds with 70 and 66 to finish at 6-under-par (136), while Cal’s Michael Kim and Baylor’s Ryan O’Rear each shot 5-under-par 137 to finish in a tie for third place.

Matt Domagalski improved 10 shots for the Grizzlies in his second 18 holes with a 1-over-par 72, but OU could not get that fourth score in either round. Coriasso and Gieseker are currently in a tie for 19th place  heading in to the third and final round.
