IUPUI holds of Oakland in five sets

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Taylor Humm had 18 kills and 17 digs and Meghan Bray had 13 kills and a career-high 32 digs but the Oakland volleyball team could not erase an early 2-0 deficit against IUPUI losing in five sets.

Oakland fell with set scores of 21-25, 19-25, 25-23, 26-24 and 8-15.

“I am proud of the way that our team fought back to force a fifth set,” said Oaklnad head coach Rob Beam.  “However, we never really displayed the intensity and focus that we had over the weekend, particularly to start and finish the match.”

Oakland (10-8, 5-4) won the third and fourth sets to send the match to a deciding, fifth set.  However, IUPUI won seven out of the first nine points in the final set and never looked back winning 15-8 behind 11 kills in the set and a team hitting percentage of .529.

OU had four players earn double-digit kills led by Humm and Bray, followed by Katie Horling (12) who hit .360 for the match and Allison Bell (10).  Ashley Nevelle has 35 assists and Alli Kirk had 25 digs, her third straight match of 20-plus digs.  IUPUI’s Shari Bernhardt set a new school record with 44 digs in the match.

The Jaguars (10-10, 5-4) started off hot as they earned 21 kills in the first set and hit .375 as a team to take the opening set 25-21.  The Jaguars pounced in the second set winning 25-19 behind a late run, winning nine out of the last 12 points and holding OU to a .024 hitting percentage.

Oakland fought back to win the third set earning 17 kills in the set to win 25-23.  The Golden Grizzlies tied the match by holding the Jaguars to a .128 hitting percentage and won seven straight points late to take a 23-20 and eventually won the set 26-24.

Oakland will be back in action on Saturday as they take on IPFW starting at 4 p.m. on Dig Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Night in the Athletics Center O’rena.
