Rochester closes out Royal Oak for third straight win; Avondale edges Berkley on Sroka’s boot
ROCHESTER HILLS — Behind 13 points in both the first and third quarters, Rochester closed the 2011 season with three straight wins behind a 26-7 triumph over visiting Royal Oak.
Manny Mendoza, who recently had a cast removed from a broken bone in his hand, hauled in a 72-year pass from John Doroshewitz to kickstart the Falcons (4-5, 3-5) to the OAA Red Division win. Mendoza also hooked up with Doroshewitz for a 22-yard scoring play in the third quarter.
Cody Devoe scored on a 9-yard run and Demetrius Magee returned a kickoff 80 yards for Rochester’s other score, which came immediately after Royal Oak’s Alex Tuszynski caught a 6-yard scoring toss from Brandon Fredrikson.
Royal Oak closed with eight straight losses. The Knights finished 1-8 overall and 0-8 in league.
AUBURN HILLS AVONDALE 24, BERKLEY 21: Kyle Sroka kicked a pair of field goals, including one late in the fourth quarter, as Avondale closed out the regular season with this three-point win after dropping three straight games.
Sroka’s winning boot came from 17 yards out. He also nailed a 30-yarder in the second quarter that put the Yellowjackets (5-4, 4-4) up 9-7.
Mitch Robinson added one rushing touchdown and one passing TD for Avondale, running in from 1 yard out while hitting Erik Stubbs for a 65-yard bomb pass. Michael Johnson also scored on an 18-yard run for the Yellowjackets.
Brandon Paul scored on runs of 32 and 20 yards for Berkley (4-5, 3-5). Nate Hampton added a 5-yard run in the first quarter to put the Bears up 7-0.
Paul’s 20-yard scamper tied the game at 21-21 midway through the fourth quarter.
