LAKE ORION — There will be a new champion in the Division 1 prep football tournament.

Walled Lake Central upset defending state champion, 20-17, Friday night on the road to stun the Dragons at home. Lake Orion closed the season with a rare three straight losses.

Bryan Maxwell nailed a pair of bookend field goals, but none was bigger than his 20-yard boot with five seconds left in leading the Vikings (7-3) into next week’s district finals at Clarkston.

Clarkston opened up the postseason with a resounding 40-12 victory over Pontiac.

Maxwell hit a 24-yarder for Walled Lake Central to build a 3-0 lead after the first quarter. The Vikings, who lost to Lake Orion in a 2002 D-1 district opener, extended the lead to 10-0 early in the second quarter on K.J. Schultz’s 3-yard run.

Lake Orion (6-4) matched the Vikings with a 1-yard run by Jacob Miller and Jeremy King’s extra point and 35-yard field goal tied the game at 10-10 just before the half.

It was Central that took the lead again in the third quarter. Zac Leimbach sprinted home from 26 yards away and Maxwell’s PAT made it 17-10.

The host Dragons tied it one last time when Sean Charette scored on a 9-yard run, which turned out to be the final scoring drive of the season for Lake Orion.

Leimbach had 25 rushes for 155 yards in the win for Walled Lake Central.

Miller finished with 78 yards on 15 carries for Lake Orion and Charette had 159 yards on a 9-for-14 passing performance to cap his career as the school’s all-time leading passer.
