VOLLEYBALL: Kettering makes it point on Athens

TROY — Waterford Kettering Monday night proved that every point in volleyball truly does count.
The Captains, facing the brink of elimination with a 14-12 deficit Game 5, rallied for the final four points to post a dramatic, 3-2, victory over Troy Athens in a Class A volleyball district at Troy High School.
Kettering posted a 16-14 edge in the fifth and deciding game to live another day in the postseason. Kettering (7-15-1) will face Waterford Mott in the district semifinals at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Troy.
“We fought to the end and we were able to pull this one out,” offered first-year Kettering coach Roly Roldan. “Even when we were down to our last point at 14-12, we believed. We never stop believing that we could win this game.
Kettering won Game 2 (25-22) and Game 3 (25-21). Athens captured Game 1 (25-18) and Game 4 (25-20) to continue the marathon match, which took over two hours to complete.
It marked the second year the Captains have eliminated Athens in the district round. Kettering knocked the Red Hawks out in five games last year in the district semifinals.
“We have seen tremendous growth this season. We are a very young team. We started four sophomores again tonight” said. “We make mistakes as young team will. But the girls never gave up.”
A block-kill from Lisa Lavelanet gave Athens its last lead at 14-12. Kettering’s Jordan Brisson answered with a kill of her own to cut the deficit down to one, a block-kill by Carley Serowoky, another kill from Brisson and a slam by Taylor Webb eventually ended the match.
“The girls practiced this over and over, being down late in Game 5 and having to come back,” said Roldan. “We’ve been down before and we’re a young team. But we’re learning to come back on teams. We learning how to believe and hopefully it turns out the right way for us.”
It did in this match for the captains, who are 1-2 in three matches this season against arch-rival Waterford Mott. Troy and Pontiac will play in the other district semifinal Wednesday with the district finals set for Friday, all atTroy.
Athens was the aggressor in Game 1 with Kettering serving up the reversal role in Game 2.
In the third game, Kettering built an early 8-2 lead and with a 22-16 edge, eventually closed out with a kill from Brisson.
The fourth game saw Athens jettisent out to leads of 5-1and 18-16.Kettering eventually tied the game at 20-20 before the Red Hawks closed with a 5-1 run, aided by two service points from Emma Kollman and a kill from Erica Siismets.
In the fifth game, the Red Hawks led 10-6 but simply could not hold on to the momentum.
“They had the momentum on us in that fifth game, but we found a way to come back,” said Roldan.
Brisson led Kettering with 12 kills and Serowoky added nine kills.
“We’re on the way up,” added Roldan. “Three years ago we only had one win.Last year we were around five-hundred with some seniors and this year we started slow but we are playing a lot better than we were early in the season.”
Lavelanet had 38 assists, seven kills with five blocks for Athens. Rachel Senopole added 11 kills with and five service points and Emma Coleman had 22 digs with nine service points for the Red Hawks.
