TROY — One year after winning its first-ever league title, Oxford earned a well-deserved promotion to the OAA Red Division hockey ranks.

The Wildcats also won their league opener Thursday at the Troy Sports Arena, topping Rochester Stoney Creek, 4-3.

Oxford outshot the Cougars, 31-25, to move to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play. The Wildcats led 2-0 after the first period but found themselves trailing 3-2 entering the final frame.

Oxford put the puck into the back of the net twice in the third to skate off to the victory.

“We were not completely happy with our performance, but our boys found a way to win, which I was real proud of them for,” said Oxford coach Dave Hague. “We were up 2-0 after the first, then down 3-2 in the second period, before tying the game late in the period. We found a way to keep the game simple in the third, play to our strengths and ultimately fight back for the win.  We need to get stronger in a few areas and will certainly address this week in practice.”

Nick Hocker led the Wildcats with a goal and two assists. Stephan Fritz added a goal and an assist, and Scott Stubenrauch and Cody Wright scored the other two goals.  Brennen Orr, Connor Novack and Nolan Chapman all had one assists apiece for Oxford.

Adam Pardonoff was in net for Oxford, stopping 22 shots for the win. Callen Stewart made 27 saves for Stoney Creek.

Matt Zuelch, Taylor Zuke and Dom Zuelch all scored for Stoney Creek.
