ROCHESTER — St. Clair Shores Unified rode a strong, four-goal opening period to defeat Rochester United in front of their home fans, 6-2, in a non-league boys hockey game at The Onyx.

The Lakers’ special teams were the difference in the game. Three power-play goals, a short-handed goal, and solid penalty kill keyed St. Clair Shores for this early season road victory.

Coming into the game the Lakers were the higher ranked team at 20th in the all-division state poll compared with United at No. 53. The disparity in numbers was not indicative of the separation of the teams on the ice.

Apart from the special teams – even-strength play was back and forth with United carrying the play over the Lakers for long stretches. The game was fast paced, physical, and characteristic of the early season where timing and coordination will only improve as the Michigan high school season progresses.

Sophomore Tommy Guzzardo led the Lakers with a three goal hat trick. Sophomore Justin Miziak had a strong night with a goal and two assists, and senior Joe Vitale also had a goal and moved the puck extremely well throughout the game and scored a goal.

On the United side, sophomore Drew Harm scored from sophomore Evan Asuncion, and senior Anthony Facca scored off assists from Matt Bowery and Aaron Sulesky.
