PREP BASKETBALL: Lapeer West’s second-quarter surge burns Brandon

OROTNVILLE — Lapeer West used a 23-10 second-quarter surge to propel them Monday to a 70-58 boys basketball victory over Ortonville Brandon.

The Panthers led just 19-16 before taking a 42-26 lead at the half. Both teams scored 12 in the third quarter, as West (2-2, 1-0) held a 54-38 edge heading into the final quarter.

Brandon (2-2, 0-1) outscored the Panthers 20-16 in the fourth quarter, but could never seriously make a late threat.

Zeshawn Jones-Parker  scored a game-high 26 points, finishing 10-of-12 from the foul line, to lead West. Cullen Turczyn added 20 pints and Kyle Swoiles added nine points.

Quinton Cook led Brandon with 22 points. Alex Bageris added 13 points and Dylan Morris also reached double figures with 10 points for the Blackhawks.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

LAPEER WEST 56 ORTONVILLE BRANDON 43: Lapeer West outscored Brandon35-22 over the middle two quarters to post this Flint Metro League win Monday.

Lapeer West trailed 9-8 after the first period but built a 24-20 lead at the break thanks to a 16-11 second quarter. The Panthers outscored the Blackhawks 19-11 in the third quarter for a 43-31 lead.

Marisa Libyrdij scored 26 to lead Lapeer West. Yazmin Dabaloneh added nine points for the Panthers.

Katelyn Hendershot scored a game-high 28 points for Brandon and Rachel DiAlion added seven points for the Blackhawks.
