Oakland’s scoring woes continue in loss despite Calhoun’s milestone

ROCHESTER HILLS — Oakland University’s scoring woes continued Saturday.

Despite Sharise Calhoun going over the 1,000 points barrier, the Golden Grizzlies were way off the mark in a 52-45 home loss to IPFW at the Athletics Center O’rena.

Bethany Watterworth finished with 19 points for Oakland (10-13, 6-8), which finished shooting 30.2 percent from the floor after going a cold 13-for-43.

OU scored just two points in the first seven minutes of the game, falling into a 13-2 hole and never fully recovering.

“Oakland isn’t used to losing so it’s tough for us to be facing the kind of adversity that we are,” said Oakland head coach Becki Francis. “We’re going to let it reveal our character and it will only make us stronger. We’re going to keep working hard to get better.”

Calhoun became just the 25th player in Oakland history to go over 1,000- points. She finished the game with 12 points, joining Watterworth as the only OU players in double-digits.

Malika Glover scored all of her five points in the second half and accounted for all of OU’s bench scoring. Oakland was missing starting center Brittany Carnego, who missed her second game with an undisclosed health issue.

The two teams split the season series, as each team won on the opposition’s home court. The Golden Grizzlies have now lost four straight, while IPFW snaps a string of six consecutive losses.

The los damped the career milestone for Calhoun.

“I think that Sharise going over 1,000 points speaks to her maturity,” said Francis. “It’s very hard to do as a player at the Division I level. It shows what a mature player she was, even when she came in as a freshman.”

Oakland battled back from a halftime deficit, pulling within 37-34 on a pair of free throws by Calhoun. After a missed shot to cut the lead to one, IPFW went on a 7-0 spurt and Oakland was unable to close the gap.

Pontiac native Stephanie Rosado had 20 points to lead IPFW, which shot 40 percent from the field and never trailed in the contest.

The Golden Grizzlies rattled off a 12-2 run to cut a 13-point deficit to 23-20. However, IPFW scored the final four points of the half, as a coast-to-coast layup by Sarah Haluska just before the buzzer put the Mastodons ahead 27-20 at the break.

Oakland will return to action on Saturday to face Southern Utah at the Athletics Center O’rena at 3:30 p.m.
