THURSDAY’S SOFTBALL: Athens sweeps Groves in OAA-White opener

TROY — Haley  Zemmer pitched a pair of wins from the circle and the Troy Athens lineup provided nine runs in an OAA White Division softball sweep of Birmingham Groves.

Athens took the opener, 5-2, before coming back to complete the sweep with a 4-2 victory in the nightcap.

Zemmer struck out 13 and allowed only three hits, two walks and no earned runs in the opener. Meg Richter was 3-for-3 and drove home a pair of runs for the Red Hawks, who scored singles runs in the fourth and fifth innings before tacking on three more runs in the sixth. Melissa Palmer, Zemmer and Amanda Mildfelt each had a double in the contest.

Groves scored one in the first and fifth.

In the nightcap, Athens scored one in the third, two in the fifth and one in the sixth and never trailed in Game 2. Zemmer fanned six in seven innings of work, scattered five hits, walked three and surrendered only one earned runs.

At the plate, Richter finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Sarah Watson was also 2-for-3 for the Red Hawks (5-3, 2-0). .

Groves scored two in the sixth but could not mount a comeback.
