FOOTBALL: WOLL reaches playoffs with OT win over Bishop Foley
WATERFORD — With one swift kick and Spencer Howell has led Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes back to the postseason after a one-year hiatus.
Howell’s 27-yard field goal in overtime lifted the host Lakers to a thrilling 39-36 overtime victory over Madison Heights Bishop Foley.
The Lakers (6-2, 54-2) led 28-17 at the half only to see the Ventures (4-4, 3-3) climb back with a 19-8 second half.
The Lakers’ Richie Cross, who finished with 20 carries for 156 yards, scored his fourth touchdown to put his tem up 36-29, only to see bishop Foley’s Nick Gwisdalla return the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for the score to force overtime.
Cross added runs of 1 and 5 yards and also caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Sal Mastromatteo. A sophomore, Mastromatteo finished with 131 passing yards on an 11-for-17 performance.
Charlie Campbell had a fumble recovery in the end zone for Our Lady of the Lakes’ first touchdown.
Gwisdilla also caught a 721-yard strike from Nate Grys, while Gyrs also found Brandan McMahon on a 8-yard slant pass and scored on a 3-yard run and Gabe O’Neil also scored on a 20-yard run. Garrett Schilling booted a 47-yard field goal and also had a pair of extra points.
Bishop Foley failed to convert on a pair of two-point conversions attempts in regulation.
