GIRLS BASKETBALL: Oxford edges Rochester; Adams torches Athens; Oakland Christian dumps Shrine
OXFORD — The OAA White Division girls basketball race is slated to be wide-open this season. If Tuesday’s opening night is an indicator, fans witnessed the closeness of teams with the Rochester-Oxford contest going down to the wire.
Oxford outscored Rochester 11-7 during the fourth quarter to rally to a 35-34 victory over two of the more experienced teams in the league.
Meagan Neff led Oxford with nine points. Jessica Murphy added seven points, Shelby Davis twined six points and Miranda Murphy added five points for the Wildcats (1-0, 1-0).
Zhana Randolph scored nine and Anne Tucker added eight points for Rochester (0-1, 0-1).
Rochester led 13-8 after the first quarter and 23-13 at the half. Oxford outscored the Falcons 10-4 in the third quarter to close to within 27-23through three quarters of play.
ROCHESTER ADAMS 49, TROY ATHENS 32: Sophomore Raiven Owusu scored the nets with a game-high 20 points to lead Adams to the season-opening victory Tuesday over the host Red Hawks.
Lauren Finkelstine added 13 points and Amber Jamison twined eight points for the Highlanders (1-0), who opened with a 15-06 run and led 32-18 by the half to take complete control.
Mary Grace Stark led Athens (0-1) with 14 points and eight rebounds.
AUBURN HILLS OAKLAND CHRISTIAN 52, ROYAL OAK SHRINE CATHOLIC 38: Becky VanSloten recorded the double-double with game-highs of 20 points and 20 rebounds to lead the way for Oakland Christian to the non-league win.
Erin Washington scored eight points and Regan Elrod finished with five points and nine rebounds for the Lancers (1-0).
Rose Konzal led Shrine with 10 points on the night.
BIRMINGHAM GROVES 56, LAKE ORION 47: Jordan Blackwell and Brianna Rowe combined for 29 points in this OAA White Division win for Groves. Blackwell scored 16, Rowe added 13 points and Nicole Prentice chipped in with 11 points for the Falcons (1-0, 1-0).
ROCHESTER STONEY CREEK 55, UTICA 20: A balanced effort led Stoney Creek to the non-league route Tuesday. Maria Zandi scored a game-high 12 points with seven assists and five steals for the Cougars. Lauren Voss added 12 points and Natalie Voss scored 10 points and snagged eight rebounds for Stoney Creek (1-0), which led 26-13 by the half and 39-17 through three quarters.
MADISON HEIGHTS BISHOP FOLEY 53, CLARKSTON EVEREST COLLEGIATE 34: A 26-15 edge by the break helped the Ventures post this CHSL crossover win Tuesday. Foley outscored the Mountaineers 27-19 in the second half.
Juliana Aiuto canned four 3-pointers and led Foley with 22 points. Emma Wonsil added 14 points.
Angelina Mastromatteo scored nine for Everest Collegiate.
MACOMB DAKOTA 60, TROY 29: Miranda Bates socred 23 and Olivia Savage added14 points for the Cougars, who led 19-2 after the first quarter and 40-16 at the half.
Sydney Heath scored eight for Troy.
