THURSDAY’S BOYS BASKETBALL: Seaholm downs Avondale; Rochester Hills routs Troy Bethany; Pontiac rolls
BIRMINGHAM — Auburn Hills Avondale led at the half, but Birmingham Seaholm had the last laugh in posting a 58-44 OAA crossover boys basketball victory Thursday.
Avondale held a 16-8 edge after eight minutes of play and a 25—23 lead heading into the locker room.
In the second half, Seaholm turned the tables with a 14-13 edge in the third quarter, which closed the gap down to 38-37, then rallied behind a game-closing 21-6 run to stymie the Yellowjackets.
Bret Houghton scored 21 and Brandon Yousif added 16 points for Seaholm (7-1).
Jabbar Mims scored 11 for Avonale (3-4).
ROCHESTER HILLS CHRISTIAN 64, TROY BETHANY CHRISTIAN 36: Marquez Hatcher led the Eagles by scoring 23 points with four steals and RCH won for the 13th straight time to open the season.
Aaron Berry added 13 points and six rebounds and Ryan Patton scored nine points for Rochester Hills Christian (13-0, 4-0).
Phil Drapinski scored 10 points for Bethany Christian (5-4, 3-1).
PONTIAC 83, FERNDALE UNIVERSITY 45: This non-league matchup turned ugly in a flash, as Pontiac jetted out to a 28-11 lead after one quarter of play and never looked back.
The Phonix (5-2) outscored University 19-14 in the second quarter and 28-14 in the third quarter before closing with a 14-6 run in the final stanza.
Jarod Jones led a balanced attack fpor Pontiac with 16 points. Dijon Cogdell added 13 points, Jordan Reed followed with 12 points and DeCorey Thompson chipped in 11 for the Phoenix, who sent 11 players into the scoring column.
Jason Penn scored 27 for Ferndale University.
PONTIAC ACADEMY OF EXCELLENCE, DETROIT UNIVERSAL ACADEMY 9: The host Cougars routed Universal behind three players in double figures.
Deon Sears scored 17, Sa’Vonne Keys added 16 and Jordan Jones contributed 12 points for PAOE (9-0).
SOUTHFIELD 62, TROY 52: Southfield remained unbeaten with this OAA Red Division victory Thursday.
The Bluejays led 29-28 at the half and40-37 through three quarters of play before closing out with a 2215 fourth quarter.
Marquel Ingram led four Southfield players in double figures with 18 points. Quinton Arnold added 13 points, Jeff Grear scored 11 and Isiah Green added 10points for Southfield (9-0, 3-0), which made 13 of 17 free throws.
Zak Noor scored 13, Chris Dorsey added 12 points and both Ben Horvath and Joe Leaonrd scored 10 apiece to keep the Colts close. .Troy made eight 3-pointers but finished only 7-for-17 from the foul line in losing for the second straight game.
AUBURN HILLS CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 59, TROY CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP ACADEMY 16: Raijon Fair picked up a triple-double with 19 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists to lead the Cougars to the non-league win Thursday.
Ashton Drew added 10 points for Auburn Hills Christian (3-2).
