FOOTBALL: Safety helps Lakes hold off ABT
WATERFORD — A safety is perhaps the least likely way for a football team to score points.
On Saturday, the defensive method proved to pay dividends for one school.
Host Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes cashed in its only points of the fourth quarter via a safety and those two points proved to be crucial in the Lakers’ 19-18 non-league football win over Melvindale Academy of Business and Tech.
Lakes never trailed ABT, leading 10-0 at the half, but watched the Gators (1-2) closed the gap on multiple occasions and even had a potential touchdown pass knocked down by Lakes junior Houston Neko.
Kyran Worthy’s seven-yard run in the third quarter put ABT on the board and closed the gap to 10-6 early in the third quarter.
The Lakers (1-2) took a 17-6 advantage when Christian Heiss scored a on a 2-yard scamper and Spencer Howell nailed his second extra point of the day.
ABT (1-2) marched back when Devante Taylor hailed in a 65-yard TD strike from Worthy, although the extra point failed, leaving .The Lakers recorded what proved to be a game-winning safety moments later.
Deonte Vanpelt returned an interception 75 yards to bring ABT to within 19-18, although the kick failed leaving the visitors one point shy.
Waterford Lakes led 10-0 at the half, courtesy of a 25-yard field goal by Howell and Zach Zednick’s 63-yard interception return for a touchdown.
Senior Sean Thomas carried the football 24 times for 136 yards, while sophomore Clay Senerius finished 10-for-16 passing for 105 yards for WOLL.
