In all reality, girls gymnastics has taken a major hit in Michigan on the high school platform in the past 10-15 years.
Once powerhouse programs don’t exist anymore and many programs have had to unify or compete with just one or two girls. Several teams have far less than 10 competitors.
Inside Oakland County, three schools competed with just one competitor this season, which is becoming commonplace. Several other programs had less than six girls on their respective rosters. In all, only 10 programs inside Oakland County competed with at least one team member
By sure numbers, it’s not what it used to be. Although there is still some talent hailing from local high school programs.
Inside the www.northoaklandsports.com coverage region, only three schools still competed in the sport in 2014 — Auburn Hills Avondale, Troy and Troy Athens. In order to still honor some of the top high school gymnasts in the North Oakland County region, the NOS staff has selected four local competitors that had strong seasons to make up the 2014 All-North Oakland Area Girls Gymnastics Team.
