LAKE ORION — During the previous decade, Clarkston was the most dominant wrestling program inside Oakland County.

The Wolves won six straight county titles in that stretch (2001-2006) and have maintained a top-10 presence at the prestigious tournament for more than three decades.

Clarkston returned to the top of the charts Dec. 21-22 at Lake Orion High School, rolling up an impressive 300.5 points to capture its first team title since 2006 and 12th overall spanning 29 seasons — all since 1990.

Two-time defending champion Oxford finished a close second with 272 points, while Rochester Adams was third (204), giving the OAA Red Division the top three slots.

Clarkston captured its first Oakland County Wrestling Tournament championship since 2006 and 12th overall Dec. 22 behind 300.5 points.

The league also had five of the top eight team finishers and six in the top 10.

Holly placed fourth with 176.5 points, followed by Waterford Kettering (157.5), Lake Orion (152), Novi Detroit Catholic Central ‘B’ (141), Rochester (130.5), Ferndale (119.5) and Birmingham Seaholm (103) in the top 10.

A total of 38 schools registered points at the 59th annual meet.

Ranked fifth in Division 1, Clarkston only had one champion over the 14 weight classes, but had 12 wrestlers finish in the top eight to medal and had five competitors finish in the runner-up slot.

“We only had one champion, but we had most of our kids get to the second day and had 12 place, which is good. I think we could have done even better, but we’ll take it,” said Clarkston coach Joe Wood, who competed for Wolves during the previous decade. “Joe DeGain was the coach the last time we won it and Joe was an All-State wrestler for Clarkston, His dad, Mike (DeGain) coached the 2001 team and we were really good back then. I’m hoping that we’re on our way back up there.”

Devin Trevino was Clarkston’s sole champion, as he defeated Oxford’s Trent Myre in the finals, 8-4, to improve to 13-1 on the young campaign. He captured his third individual county title.

“This is what we were (hoping) for,” said Tervino, a senior. “Our ultimate goal is to compete in the state championships and get us to the Final Four. We’ve been hitting it extra hard in the (wrestling) room lately and we’re going to do what it takes to reach our goals.”

Seventh-ranked Oxford had won three titles (2000, 2016, 2017) and has not finished lower than fourth place over the past 20 seasons.

“It’s something that we take a lot of pride in,” admitted Oxford coach Ross Wingert. “You always want to do well here and try to win it. But we have always done well here and I think we (competed) well (this year). Clarkston was just a little better this year.”

Oxford had a pair of individual champions, as Jack Thompson (119) and Austin Schlicht (215) came away with titles.

Novi Detroit Catholic Central, which won seven straight team championship from 2009-2015, sent its “B’ team for the fourth straight season and still finished in the top 10 with several placers.  The top-ranked Shamrocks sent their ‘A’ team to an out-of-state tournament for the third straight season.

Rochester Adams had its highest finish since the early 2000s, a nice surprise for a team that graduated three county placers and state qualifiers.

“I honestly didn’t know how we’d do, to be completely honest,” offered Adams coach Mike Holtz. “We have some nice seniors, but some very good underclassmen.

Novi Detroit Catholic Central, which won seven straight from 2009-2015, sent its “B’ team for the fourth straight season and still finished in the top 10 with several placers.  The top-ranked Shamrocks sent their ‘A’ team to an out-of-state tournament for the third straight season.

Catholic Central’s tremendous depth was proven once again, as the Shamrocks still came away with one individual champion. Logan Sanom (145) won his first county crown.

Rochester’s Kavan Troy was the Lower Weights Meet MVP. The freshman pinned Ferndale’s Dylan Coleman in 53 seconds to complete the victorious weekend.

Lake Orion’s Dylan Wellbaum captured the 171-pound title, posting a 20-3 technical fall victory over Oxford’s Caleb Talbert to finish off the day. He was named the Upper Weights MVP.

Holly had a trio of champions, the most of any school. Jacob Gonzales (135), Cade Dallwitz (189) and Blake Querio (285) were victorious for the Bronchos.

Waterford Kettering produced a pair of champions behind stellar performances by Mark Brado (125) and TJ Daugherty (130).

Rochester Stoney Creek’s Andy Hampton (112), Birmingham Seaholm’s Jackson Vance (140) and Lake Orion’s Jaden Fisher (152) rounded out the individual winners.
