BOYS SOCCER: Romeo ousts Oxford; Brandon blanks Lake Fenton; Goodrich downs Avondale

| October 16, 2020 | Comments (0)

ROMEO — Host Romeo picked up a two-goal lead at the half and was able to squeak past OAA White Division champion Oxford Thursday night in a Division 1 pre-district contest.

Austin Taseski and Ranier Lopez both had goals and Taseski also drew an assist for Romeo (8-4-2), which reached the district semifinals for the second straight season. Last year the Bulldogs were ousted by Rochester Adams, 1-0.

Zach Townsend, who has committed to Division I Oakland University, had the goal for Oxford and Tristan Bennett made nine saves for the Wildcats (5-7-3), who were missing four starters.

“It was a strange game, and not the way we hoped to finish,” said Oxford coach Adam Bican. “We had four guys out (for various reasons) and we had to move some guys around. The ball was in the air a lot — not a ton of possession. We tried to tie it up but couldn’t. And Tristan made a couple of nice saves to give us a chance. We are very young and to have guys out hurt us quite a bit.”

Romeo will face Clarkston at home at 5 p.m. Monday in the district semifinals. Clarkston ousted Rochester Adams 2-0 on Thursday.
