SOFTBALL: Brandon splits with Lapeer West; Notre Dame Prep haunts Richard; Rochester sweeps Oxford
LAPEER — Ortonville Brandon took Game 1 and Lapeer West won Game 2 in a Flint Metro League softball double-header Tuesday.
Brandon collected 15 hits in the opener, to back the nine-hitter by pitcher Christina Mihalick, who stuck out three. Genna Oertel finished 3-for-3, scored a run and drove in another, Miranda Zimmerman was 2-for-4, had two RBI and scored a run, and Rae Beadlescomb was 3-for-4 with and scored a run.
Brandon (3-12, 1-4) led 6-2 entering the seventh and held on for the win.
Lapeer West won the nightcap, collecting 10 hits while leading 4-1 after the first inning. The Panthers scored single runs in the fourth and fifth and four more in the sixth inning.
Brandon plated one in the first, two in the second, three in the fifth and one in the sixth but couldn’t complete the comeback.
Oertel finished 3-for-4, scored three times and drove in a run for Brandon. Katy Henderschott was 2-for-3, drove in two runs and scored two runs, while Kristine Jones was 3-for-4 including a triple and scored twice.
PONTIAC NOTRE DAME PREP 8-6, RIVERVIEW GABRIEL RICHARD 2-0: Notre Dame Prep moved to 12-3 overall and 10-3 in CHSL AA Division play with this sweep Tuesday of Gabriel Richard.
Prep scored three in the fourth and five in the fifth in recording the win in Game 1. Courtney Wroubel was 2-for-3, scored twice and drove in two runs in the opener. Hannah Antosz was 2-for-3, had two home runs, scored twice and drove in five runs, while Katy Roose finished 2-for-3 and had an RBI.
Carly Joseph finished six strong innings, scattering six hits with seven strikeouts and three walks. Danielle Deiotte pitched a scoreless seventh.
In the nightcap, the Fighting Irish scored single runs in the second, third and sixth innings, while scoring three in the fifth.
Joseph gave up just one hit and struck out two with non walks.
Erin Collins was 3-for-4 and scored two runs, Wroubel finished 3-for-4 and scored a runs and Joseph aided her own cause by going 2-for-3 for NDP.
ROCHESTER 5-9, OXFORD 2-1: Rochester continued one of its best starts in school history with this OAA crossover sweep.
Rochester overcame an early 2-0 deficit to win Game 1, scoring a single run in the third and four more runs in the fourth inning. Mackenzie Duff finished 2-for-3 with an RBI double, while Emily Smith was 2-for-3 for the Falcons.
Haley Lenderman gave up just three hits and struck out seven against one walk in gaining the win for the circle in the opener for Rochester.
In the nightcap, Landerman struck out two and scattered 10 hits in Game 2 for Rochester. Maggie Irvine finished 2-for-4 with a double and grand slam for five RBI, while Alex Brinkman was 2-for-4 for Rochester.
Alex Palumbo was 2-for-4 for Oxford in the second game.
