For the fourth straight year, North Oakland County placed another boys skiing team in the top three at the state finals while another team finished in the top six. What that signifies is that this is still a hotbed for high school skiing prospects.
A plethora of talented individuals hailed from area squads this winter, making the choices for the postseason squad quite difficult. The 2014 All-North Oakland Area Boys Skiing Team, selected by NOS staff, features six on the first team, seven on the second team and 12 honorable mentions and plenty of talent that shined not only on slopes of southeastern Michigan but around the state as well.
Below are the profiles of each skier named to the first team. Mike Foyteck of Clarkston was named Coach of the Year for leading the Wolves to yet another successful campaign.
FIRST TEAM
RYAN CALLAHAN, Clarkston: A senior in his fourth campaign with the Wolves, Callahan led Clarkston to four straight top three finishes at the Division 1 state finals, one of the best streaks in this region’s history. He was third in the giant slalom at the state finals to go along with multiple notable finishes this season. At the Pine Knob Divisional meet, Callahan was second in the GS and sixth in the slalom. At the Pine Knob regional, he raced third in the slalom and sixth in the GS. Clarkston’s top four skiers, including Callahan, did not compete at the SEMSL championships this season. He made the All-Oakland County First Team and All-State First Team in the GS.
LARS JOERGENS-KOKA, Holly-Oxford Unified: A junior in his third varsity campaign, Joergens-Koka, a student at Oxford who also plays lacrosse, finished in the top 12 at the big four meets this season, capped by finishing fourth in the GS and fifth in the slalom at the Division 1 state finals at Schuss Mountain at Shanty Creek Resort. He was also first in the GS and third in the slalom at the Mt. Holly Divisional meet, first in the GS and sixth in the slalom at the Pine Knob regional and fourth in the GS and 12th in the slalom at the SEMSL championships. He garnered All-State First Team honors in both the slalom and GS and found a spot on the All-Oakland County First Team as well.
JACOB MCINTOSH, Clarkston: One of many standouts on Clarkston’s deep roster of talent, McIntosh finished in the top 30 in each race at the divisional, regional and state finals this season. The sophomore was 10th in the slalom and 11th in the GS at the Pine Knob Divisional, 15th in the GS and 19th in the slalom at the Pine Knob regional and 16th in the GS and 26th in the slalom at the D-1 state meet. He also earned All-Oakland County Honorable Mention status this season.
JUSTIN PAVLISCAK, Lake Orion: Part of the reason why Lake Orion squeezed into the state meet and finished sixth in Division 1 was the consistency of this senior. A four-year varsity veteran, Pavliscak finished ninth in the slalom and 55th in the GS at the state finals. He was also eighth in the slalom and 10th in the GS at the Pine Knob Divisional, 12th in the slalom and 13th in the GS at the Pine Knob regional and 16th in the slalom and 31st in the GS at the SEMSL meet. He earned Division 1 All-State Second Team in the slalom and All-Oakland County Second Team.
LOGAN STETSKO, Lake Orion: Another veteran on the slopes, Stetsko’s senior campaign featured a variety of top-flight finishes, including six top-10s at championship meets. He was third in the GS And fifth in the slalom at the Pine Knob Divisional, fourth in the slalom and seventh in the GS at the Pine Knob regional, third in the GS and seventh in the slalom at the SEMSL meet, and capped the year by placing 12th in the GS and 14th in the slalom at the D-1 state finals. Stetsko earned a spot on the All-State squad, making the cut for Second Team GS and Third Team slalom. He was also honored as a member of the All-Oakland County Second Team.
DEREK VANITALLIE, Clarkston: This junior continued to impress during his third varsity campaign, which included winning the GS and finishing 36th in the slalom at the D-1 state finals. He also placed second in both races at the Pine Knob Divisional and fourth in the slalom and sixth in the GS at the Pine Knob Divisional. He earned All-State First Team accolades in the GS and All-Oakland County First Team status.
COACH OF THE YEAR
MIKE FOYTECK, Clarkston: Foyteck has been a head coach at Clarkston for 10 non-consecutive seasons and been on the coaching staff for more than 20 years. The school’s tradition-rich success under Foyteck has definitely continued in recent years, as Clarkston was third at the Division 1 state finals this season after placing second in both 2013 and 2011 and winning a state title in 2012. The Wolves won the Pine Knob title this winter, going 8-0 in duals and finishing second at the divisional meet. Clarkston also captured its fifth straight regional crown and finished eighth at the SEMSL meet where Foyteck rested many of his top skiers.
