ORION TWP. — Despite winning a couple of tournaments, Oxford boys golf coach Terry Kelley has felt his team has flown under the radar.

So Wednesday’s impressive performance at Bald Mountain Golf Course didn’t surprise the veteran coach. Neither did the tournament win.

Oxford put together a team score of 302 to tie Rochester at the top of the 12-school field. The unranked Wildcats edged Rochester on the fifth-man tiebreaker to win their first-ever district title.

“I am not surprised at all. We’ve had some really good scores this season,” said Kelley. “We won the Bay City Tournament and the Lapeer Tournament and had some really good individual scores at those tournaments. We have five guys who can shoot in the 70s and we had four today. It just so happened that our top golfers did that on the same day.”

Oxford’s fifth golfer, Eric Curtis, carded an 82 to break the tie with Rochester by two strokes. Doug Schultz (73), Matt Prince (74), Rollie Gilberson (76) and JJ Lewis (79) led Oxford.

The top six teams and the top six individuals not on the top six teams advance to the regional round next week, with this district’s participants meeting next Thursday at Davison Country Club.

Following Oxford and Rochester, Clarkston was back in third with 303 and Grand Blanc was fourth at 304, as only three strokes separated the top four schools. Fenton (312) and Bloomfield Hills (314) grabbed the final two regional qualifying berths.

Rochester Adams, the Oakland County Division I champion last week, was seventh and left on the outside looking in with a 317. Perennial power Lake Orion finished eighth (324), while Waterford Kettering (326), Rochester Stoney Creek (337), Romeo (363) and Waterford Mott (398) rounded out the team scores.

Rochester was paced by sophomore Michael Busse, who was runner-up with a one-over round of 71. Jared Nylund (74), Scott DiFilippo (76) and Ludovic Clavette-Lachapelle (81) helped the Falcons to the team runner-up slot.

“Of course you always hope you win, but at this stage the important thing is we advanced,” offered Rochester coach Paul Marti. “There were so many good teams in this district that were so close. Look at Adams. They won the Oakland County Tournament and didn’t get out of our district. When you have 8-9 good teams in the district you need to have a lot of good scores to advance to the regional. I can’t complain about a 302. We thought that a 300 to 305 would win it and we were right there.”

Adams junior Brandon Barrows was the medalist with a two-under round of 68, leading 59 golfers. There were 17 golfers that shot 76 or lower.

Rochester’s Busse was second, followed by Clarkston’s Brendon Graham (72) and Fenton’s John Lloyd (72). Oxford’s Schultz and Bloomfield Hills’ Kyle Petrovich tied for fifth at 73, Rochester’s Nylund, Oxford’s Prince and Grand Blanc’s Noah Royer all shot 74 to tie for seventh, while Lake Orion’s Schuyler Werth (75), Kettering’s Joe Baker (75), Clarkston’s duo of Lucas Nesbitt (75) and Nick Badgley (75) and Grand Blanc’s Jordan Harris (75) all tied in the 10th spot.
