Oakland’s Barrett, Hildebrandt sweep Summit League honors
ELMHURST, Ill. – Andrew Barrett and Mitch Hildebrandt were named the Summit League Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week respectively, announced by the league office on Monday. It is the first time Barrett has won the award, while Hildebrandt claims the honor for a seventh time in his career.
As a seven-time Defensive Player of the Week, Hildebrandt equals Oakland standout Jeff Wiese for the most times winning the award in league history. The senior goalkeeper from Livonia, Mich. made a total of 17 saves during the week, allowed just two goals and earned his 17th career shutout.
Hildebrandt equaled his career-high with 14 saves in a double-overtime match against Michigan in the middle of the week. He followed that effort with three saves against IPFW on Saturday, as he earned his first shutout of the season in the 1-0 win over the Mastodons, which entered the match boasting the league’s top offense.
Barrett earned the award after scoring the match-winning goal in the win over IPFW. Barrett’s second goal of the season was a bending and dipping effort from 30-yards out, which help Oakland beat an IPFW team that came into the weekend with a perfect 2-0 league record. Barrett also led OU with two shots against U-M on Wednesday.
A midfielder from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Barrett has started every match this season. He is among the leading scorers on the team with two goals and one assist..
Barrett, Hildebrandt and the rest of the Oakland men’s soccer team are back in action on Wednesday, hosting rival Detroit at the OU Soccer Field at 7 p.m. in a derby match.
