WEDNESDAY’S PREP ROUNDUP: Athens holds of Ferndale

TROY — Troy Athens received quite a scare Wednesday night. If anything, the Red Hawks learned a lesson that no lead is safe.

Athens held on to defeat Ferndale in an OAA crossover boys basketball game, 81-78, but not before the visiting Eagles went on a 35-21 fourth-quarter and came three points shy of pulling off the massive rally.

Athens led 19-16 after the first quarter and 35-30 at the half. The Red Hawks used a 25-13 surge in the third quarter to go up 60-43 entering the final frame.

Nate Stepney led four Eagles in double figures with 28 points. Jordan Ellis added 17 points, Aaron Rice scored 11 and Robert Baiz scored 10 for Ferndale (2-1).

Marcarius Coakley scored 25 to lead Athens (3-0).Caleb McIntosh added 16 points, Jolly Grewal chipped in with 11 points, Aaron Fox scored 10 and Tim Freiman followed with eight points for the Red Hawks.
