WATERFORD — Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes is back on the rise to glory. The Lakers’ softball team took the nest step by claiming its first regional championship Saturday in five years on its home field.

The Lakers defeated Portland St. Patrick, 12-4, for the title.

WOLL advances to the state quarterfinals Tuesday at Saginaw Valley State University, where the Lakers will face top-ranked Unionville-Sebewaing.

The Lakers picked up eight hits and 10 walks in the finals and scored four runs in the third, four in the fifth and four more in the sixth to pull away.

Michelle Cottrell gained the win from the circle and received plenty of offensive support. She struck out three and scattered seven hits and one walk in the victory.

Hannah Garris hammered a two-run double, Angela Mastromatteo laced an RBI triple and Farrah Nordman added an RBI single as the Lakers built a 4-0 advantage in the third inning.

In the fourth frame, the Lakers tacked on four more runs to pull away. Lauren Robak (RBI double), Nordman (RBI walk) and two errors plated the runs for an 8-2 advantage.

WOLL capped the scoring in the sixth with four more runs, as Angela Mastromatteo slapped a two-run single and Jules Mastromatteo and Abby Troy chipped in with RBI singles.

Richelle Vallier had a pair of RBI singles to lead St. Patrick, while Allison Werner and Elle Lehman each had solo home runs for the Shamrocks.
