Top-ranked Marine City too much for Notre Dame Prep

EAST CHINA TWP. — For a half, Marine City was slowed offensively Friday. The top-ranked Mariners could only muster a 14-10 lead on sixth-ranked Pontiac Notre Dame Prep.

One of the state’s top offenses took over in the second half. Marine City erupted for 27 points in the third quarter and tacked on 14 more in the fourth stanza and cruised to a 55-31 triumph over the Fighting Irish in a Division 4 district championship.

Marine City (11-0) became the first team all season to score over 20 points on the Fighting Irish and snapped Notre Dame Prep’s school record 14-game win streak dating back to last season.

It also marked the second time in three years the Mariners knocked NDP out of the postseason.

Anthony Scarcelli had 14 carries for 161 yards and three touchdowns to pace the attack for Marine City. Scarcelli was held to just 30 yards in the first half but scored on runs of 1, 62 and 28 yards in the second half for the Mariners, who will host Detroit Crockett Tech in the D-4 regional finals next weekend.

Marine City led 41-23 entering the fourth quarter.

Jaime Salisbury, who caught a 28-yard scoring toss and scored rushing touchdowns of 28 and 91 yards, had 145 yards on 10 carries to add to the offensive display for Marine City. Adam Kroll also had a 10-yard scoring pass to Dillon Ferguson and Donald Burns chipped in with a 5-yard TD run for the Mariners. Dylan Alexander made seven extra points.

Dan Durkin was 19-for- 39 passing for 218 yards and two touchdowns for the Fighting Irish, who were tied 7-7 at the end of the first quarter. Ruairi McGreevy’s 30-yard field goal was enough to close the gap to 14-10 at the half for NDP.

Troy Sassack caught 10 passes for 81 yards, Patrick Bartoli caught two touchdown passes of 16 and 15 yards, respectively, and Jacob Romeo ran for 106 yards on 20 carries and a touchdown run of 25 yards for the Fighting Irish (10-1), who were outscored 41-21 in the second half, including 27-13 in the third quarter.

Aidan Cullen added a 9-yard run for the Irish.
