Shrine wipes out Oakland Christian in its hardcourt return

ROYAL OAK — Due to unfortunate circumstances, Auburn Hills Oakland Christian had to drop its longtime proud varsity girls basketball program.

The Lancers made their return Tuesday night and found the path quite difficult.

Royal Oak Shrine Catholic made that return a forgettable one as the Knights slayed the Lancers, 38-14, in a non-conference game.

Shrine (1-0) led just 6-4 after the first quarter but expanded that lead to 17-7 by the half.

Oakland Christian never scored more than four points in an entire quarter, as they are trying to rebuild its program that has been a consistent top 10 program for over two decades until last year, when the school did not field a varsity team.

Rebeca Zardus led Shrine with nine points. Erin Kapala and Morgan Button both scored six for the Knights.

An 11-4 run in the third quarter gave Shrine a 28-11 advantage and the Knights closed with a 10-3 run in the fourth quarter.

Senior Rachel TerMarsch scored nine points for the Lancers, held to their lowest point total in nearly three decades. Oakland Christian has reached the state quarterfinals six times in school history and even captured the Class D state championship in 1992.
