ROCHESTER HILLS — Although Clarkston reached the Class A regional finals last season, the Wolves didn’t start the campaign with a long win streak.

In fact, Clarkston was only 2-4 by mid-December a year ago.

The Wolves, who returned eight of their top 10 players from last season, have raced out to a 4-0 start this season, topping host Rochester Adams, 41-27, in an OAA crossover girls basketball game Thursday.

“Last year we started kind of slow but then we went on a nice run (of wins),” recalled Clarkston coach Tim Wasilk, whose team finished 18-6 last season, winning 16 of their final 18 ball games. “But a lot of our wins were close wins. We had a lot of wins that were under five or 10 points.”

Two years ago Clarkston finished 7-14. Now, the Wolves have several third-year and fourth-year varsity veterans. It was that experience that helped Clarkston pull away from Adams.

“I think being in close games in the past, that experience really helped us,” said Wasilk. “We are used to being in that position. We have a lot of experience and depth and that really helps in a game like this.”

Clarkston held Adams to a dismal 22 percent shooting night (9-for-42), including no three-pointers. The Wolves also managed to post an astounding 41-18 advantage on the boards and forced the Highlanders into 16 turnovers.

Still, Adams was within striking range in the fourth quarter.

Senior point guard Lauren Boyle swished a pair of free throws to pull the Highlanders to within 33-27 with 4:32 to play. Adams would not score again.

Clarkston closed with an 8-0 run, making all four free throws down the stretch along with a pair of layups.

It was the first loss of the season for Adams (2-1).

“I cannot fault their effort,” offered veteran Adams coach Fran Scislowicz. “I thought we played some good team defense. We took them away from some of the things they like to do. But I think we left some points out on the floor. You have to credit Clarkston. They had a reason for (our cold shooting night).”

Clarkston struggled in the first half, converting only 6-of-23 field goal attempts and 8-of-12 free throws. The Wolves had a hard time with Adams’ pressure defense in the first half, turning the ball over an uncharacteristic 13 times.

Adams didn’t help its own cause in the first half, shooting 4-for-23 from the floor.

Clarkston led 8-7 after the first quarter and 20-13 at the break. In the second half, the Wolves only committed three turnovers and slowly pulled away behind the play of senior guard Megan Hastings and junior guard Delaney Kenny.

Hastings had a fine floor game with a game-high 13 points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists. Kenny supplied seven points, scoring her team’s final four points, to go along with seven rebounds and two steals.

Senior forward Anna Manilla added six points and six rebounds and freshman center Erika Davenport had another fine game off the bench with five points and nine rebounds for Clarkston.

Boyle led Adams with 10 points, six rebounds and three assists.
