CLARKSTON — The last time Lake Orion Baptist faced Clarkston Springfield Christian the basketball court, the Lions were able to put together a late night rally.

That came in the first round of the Michigan Association of Christian Schools Division II boys basketball tournament last February. The Lions had to close with a 26-7 run to post a 57-52 come-from-behind victory.

This time came in the Fundamental Baptist Athletic Conference Red Division opener for both teams — and this time it wasn’t close.

Lake Orion Baptist opened with a 12-2 run and never looked back in grounding the Eagles, 54-29.

“The last time we played them it was really close,” said first-year Lake Orion Baptist coach Tim Barnes. “We were down big in the third quarter and had to come back on them. I know Springfield lost a lot of players from that team.”

Springfield Christian graduated its top six players and had two reserves transfer. The Eagles only have three players with varsity experience and are in the midst of a major rebuilding campaign.

Lake Orion Baptist went on a 17-10 run in the second quarter to build a 29-12 at the half. The Lions outscored Springfield Christian 25-17 in the second half.

Sophomore center Mark Dewar scored 21 points with seven rebounds to pace the Lions (1-1, 1-0). Senior James Noruk added 13 points, seven boards, five steals and three blocked shots and sophomore Jason Noruk chipped in with six points and 11 rebounds for the Lions.

Sophomore point guard Andrew Alonzi scored 14 points for Springfield Christian (1-6, 0-1).

“I think we are starting to come around a little bit,” said Barnes. “Last year we were really young. We only lost two players. We have a little more height this season and we have more experience. I expect that we’ll be a better team this season.”
