THURSDAY’S BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Clarkston grounds Hawks; Lake Orion cruises past Berkley

FARMINGTON HILLS Three games, three double-digit wins for Clarkston.

The Wolves, Class A regional finalists the past two season, opened up its OAA Red Division title defense with a resounding 86-46 victory over Farmington Harrison.

The Wolves outscored the Hawks in all four quarters, and scored over 20 points in the first three frames to built an insurmountable lead.

Jordan Dasuqi scored a game-high 24 points t lean another balanced effort for Clarkston (3-0, 1-0), which sent 11 players into the scoring column with four finishing with doubles figures and six scoring at least seven points.

Nick Owens and Matt Dellinger both added 12 points apiece, Mitch Baenziger scored 10 and both Marquis Tynan and Nick Tatu chipped in with seven points apiece.

Clarkston finished the night 17-for-28 from the foul line and nailed seven three-pointers as a team to account for 38 points. The Wolves also converted 24 two-point baskets.
Clarkston opened with a 22-9 run and tacked on another 22-14 surge in the second period for a44-23 lead at the half. The Wolves exploded with a 25-10 surge in the third frame, good for a 69-33 lead before closing out with a 17-13 edge in the fourth quarter while playing all reserves for a long stretch of the second half.

Justin Pitts had 11 points and Mike Vasovsky added seven points for Harrison (0-4, 0-2).

LAKE ORION 58, BERKLEY 34: After a season-opening loss to Rochester Adams, Lake Orion has turned the tables with a three-game win streak. The latest came Thursday in this OAA crossover game at Berkley.

Lake Orion outscored the Bears in all four quarters and romped to the 24-point win.

Chaz Miller and John McCarty both had 10 points for the Dragons (3-1). Brad Watterworth added eight points and Roman Kuster scored six, as the Dragons’ frontcourt dominated.

Lake Orion led 15-9 after the first quarter and 26-15 at the half. A 14-10 spurt in the third quarter and an game-closing 18-10 surge in the fourth quarter helped create the rout.

Jason Taylor scored 12 for Berkley, which graduated eight players and five starters.


IMLAY CITY 64, OXFORD 60: Imlay City’s frontline was to much to handle and the Spartans marched past the Wildcats in this non-league contest.

Evan Vanbrook scored 24 and Jeff VanDyke added 17 points for Imlay City. Jeff Hopkins, Imlay City’s 6-foot-11 senior center, added 10 points and 14 rebounds.

Mark Hazelwood scored 25 points, including four three-pointers, but only converted 9-of-16 free throws.

Michael Kitchner drained four treys and had 16 points and Jacques Toussaint had six points for Oxford, which was missing its top two post players.

Imlay City led 11-7 after the first quarter and 22-19 at the half. The Spartans went on a 29-21 run in the third quarter to open up a 51-40 advantage before Oxford closed with a 20-13 spurt, coming up four points short of forcing overtime.

AUBURN HILLS AVONDALE 61, ROCHESTER STONEY CREEK 52: Avondale handed the Cougars its fourth straight loss to open the season by closing out with a 24-15 run in this OAA crossover game.

Stoney Creek built a 30-24 lead at the half but saw the Yellowjackets soar back behind a 15-7 run in the third-quarter, good enough for a 39-39 advantage heading into the final period.

Landen Tenwolde scored 15 for Avondale (2-1). A.J. Susick added 11 points and DeaQuan Terrell scored eight for the Yellowjackets, who shot only 19-fro-36 from the foul line.

Ben Temrowski scored 16, canning four three-pointers, and Stephan Makowski added 12 points for the Cougars (0-4), who were 20-fro-27 from the stripe to stay close.
PONTIAC 68, SOUTHFIELD 41: Pontiac handed Southfield its third loss in six days by grounding the Blue Jays in OAA Red Division play.

Jamarea Samples scored 18 and Jarod Jones 14 added 14 points for Pontiac, which drained eight three-pointers in the contest.

Pontiac only led 13-9 after the first quarter and held a 27-19 lead at the half. The Phoenix opened up a tight game with  20-10 third quarter and a 21-10 fourth frame.

Earl Swift scored 14 for Southfield and Darnell Butler added six points for the Blue Jays.
