TUESDAY’S BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Hazelwood helps Oxford drop Hamtramck; Plymouth Educational edges Northwest in overtime
HAMTRAMCK — Mark Hazelwood began the season in a similar fashion how he exited last season: Scoring points in bunches.
The senior guard from Oxford scored a game-high 18 points to help Oxford topple host Hamtramck 58-24 in a non-conference boys basketball season opener.
Michael Kitchner scored nine points and freshman Glacier Wallington added seven points for the Wildcats.
DETROIT PLYMOUTH EDUCATIONAL CENTER 75, ROCHESTER HILLS LUTHERAN NORTHWEST 72 (OT): Plymouth Educational Center outscored host Lutheran Northwest 20-17 in the extra session to gain this overtime non-league win Tuesday.
Terry Miller led with 18 points for Plymouth Educational Center (1-0), which closed regulation with a 19-15 fourth quarter. Mark Berry added nine points and Nick redman scored eight for Plymouth, which made eight three-pointers in the contest.
Nathan Drews scored a game-high 38 points, including a perfect 15-for-15 from the foul line, and Gurther Rathor chipped in 11 points for the Crusaders (0-1). Josh Morrison added nine points for Northwest, which went on a 21-13 run in the second quarter for a 26-23 halftime lead and a 14-11 third quarter spurt for a 40-34 advantage.
TROY ATHENS 73, HAZEL PARK 40: Jolly Grewal scored 19 points to lead the Red Hawks to the season-opening win. Aaron Fox added 10 points and Tim Freiman scored six the Red Hawks. Damon Hannon scored eight points for Hazel Park (0-1).
SWARTZ CREEK 64, ORTONVILE BRANDON 42: Brandon could not hang with host Swartz Creek in this Flint Metro League game. Quinton Cook scored 13 points and Dylan Morris added 11 points for Brandon (0-1).
AUBURN HILLS AVONDALE 70, FARMINGTON HARRISON 54: A 27-10 lead after the first quarter was enough to carry Avondale to the season-opening win. Landen Tenwolde scored 13 points and Brandon Golden added 11 points to lead host Avondale. A.J. Freeman scored 19 points for Harrison (0-1).
ROYAL OAK 56, ROCHESTER STONEY CREEK 53: Dre Smith was a one-man wrecking crew for Royal Oak Tuesday night, finishing with six three-pointers en route to a game-high 29 points for the host Ravens. Elvis Tinaj scored 16 points and Ben Temrowski added 13 points for Stoney Creek (0-1).
DETROIT LOYOLA 58, ROCHESTER 46: Loyola used a 36-28 second half to pull away from Rochester in this non-league contest. Devonte Jones scored 13 and Montel Cook and Justin King both finished with 10 points apiece for Loyola. Taylor Perry scored 17 and Paris Periera added 15 points for Rochester (0-1).
