MACOMB TWP. — Rochester Stoney Creek proved you don’t have to have a magical regular season to find magic in the postseason.

Stoney Creek played in its fourth straight regional final with a sub-five-hundred record Saturday night at the Suburban Macomb Ice Arena and still walked off the ice with a 5-3 victory over Romeo.

It marked the second regional crown in three years for the Cougars and sends Stoney Creek into Tuesday’s Division 2 state quarterfinals where they will take on Port Huron Northern at the same arena at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Last season, Port Huron Northern ousted Stoney Creek in the regional finals, 2-1.

Stoney Creek scored three goals in the second period and tacked on two important goals in the third frame for the regional trophy.

Romeo led 1-0 in the second period before Stoney Creek scored three goals in a five-minute span for a 3-1 advantage. Matt Zuelch had a goal and an assist in the run, while Brian Gill and Cameron O’Shea also scored in the stretch to put the Cougars up by two goals.

Matt Zuelch and Chris Stansbury also scored in the third period for Stoney Creek (13-14-3). Taylor Duke notched two assists in the win and Maxx Grant made 22 saves for the Cougars, who finished in the bottom half of the eight-school OAA Red Division this season.

Jeremy Speer and Bradley Garner scored in the third period for Romeo. Alexander Gate staked the Bulldogs to a 1-0 lead early in the first period.

Anthony Grifka finished with 41 saves in a losing effort for Romeo.
