MADISON HEIGHTS — It was only fitting that two of Oakland County’s premier baseball programs faced off in the opening round of the Oakland County Spring Break Baseball Tournament Monday.
Both Madison Heights Bishop Foley and Lake Orion have won at least one state title each in the past five years and could very well be mainstays in the state’s top 10 this season, like most seasons in the past decade.
Bishop Foley, the defending Division 4 state champions, grabbed an early 4-0 lead and held on for a 5-2 triumph over the visiting Dragons during pool play of the third annual 11-schooltournament, out on by Rochester High.
“Bishop Foley is always a good team to play against and a good team to play on the first day of the season. I won’t say we gave them the game, but we had a couple of mistakes and a team like Foley made will make you pay,” admitted Lake Orion coach Andy Schramek. “A (passed ball and an error) hurt us in the end.”
Foley (1-0) plated one run in the first and tacked on three more in the fourth to take a lead they would not relinquish.
Foley’s Brian Bayliss, who gained the win on the mound with a four-hitter and five strikeouts, had a sacrifice fly and Luke Ortel and Austin Lukaschewski had RBI singles to help the Ventures claim its 4-0 lead. Orel contributed an RBI double for the fifth run while the first run was scored on a passed ball.
Brett Sunde finished 2-for-3 for the Ventures.
Roman Kuster and Connor Hopkins had two hits apiece for Lake Orion. Brad Schaenzer belted a solo home run and had an RBI single in the seventh. Nick Deeg suffered the loss for Lake Orion despite fanning nine.
“They made a few more plays and swung the bat a little better than we did,” admitted Schramek.
LAKE ORION 11, ALMONT 5: Lake Orion cruised past Almont on Monday as part of pool play in the Oakland County Spring Break Baseball Tournament.
Ryan Lambrick slapped three hits and had four RBI to pace the Dragons (1-1), who won the game in five innings. Nick Vogelmeier scored four runs and Jacob Gardner stuck out 10 over four innings of work to gain the win on the mound.
