GIRLS SOCCER: Top-ranked Troy stymies No. 2 Marian
TROY — Irene Young has been slowed in the early stages of the 2012 prep girls soccer campaign, as she has become the No.1 target by opposing defenses.
The senior from Troy showed signs of returning to form Saturday afternoon in a game featuring state powers.
Young converted a penalty kick in the 12th minute and her teammates made it stand in a 1-0 non-league victory over Birmingham Marian.
Emily Wrubel was tripped up in the penalty box and Young, a Miss Soccer candidate who scored 28 goals last season, left no doubt by depositing the ball into the corner of the goal.
Troy, ranked No. 1 in Division 1, improved to 5-0-0 on the young season, while Marian, ranked second in Division 2, slipped to 3-1-0.
Junior Alison Holland made seven saves for Troy, pitching her fifth shutout of the season.
Marian held a 7-3 shots edge in the contest, as defenses held scoring chances to a minimum.
