Auburn Hills Avondale

HEAD COACH: Tommy Kurzewski, 11th season.

2011 RECORD: 16-11, 8-8 OAA Red Division (tied-fifth).

2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost to Clarkston in Division 1 district finals (12-9).

RETURNING STARTERS: Matt Andrus, sr. INF-P (fourth-year varsity; batted .420 as a soph. and .320 as a junior; signed with Adrian); Mitch Robinson, sr. C-P (fourth-year varsity; hit .390 last year and is a solid defensive catcher who can shut down a running game; signed with Northwood for football); AJ Susick, sr.P-1B; (third-year starter; went 6-5 on the mound last year with 45 strikeouts in 46 IP; signed with Madonna); Dylan Ahern, sr. P-SS (third-year starter; hit .301 and went 3-2 with a 1.28 ERA last year; Joe Davison, sr. OF; (third-year starter; hit .275 with 26 runs last year); Todd Tarian, sr. OF-DH.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Jordan Cooper, jr. OF; Matt Wilson, sr. OF-3B; Derek Baker, sr. P; Matt Smith, sr. 1B-P.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Andrew Petty, jr. 2B; Craig Zimmerman, jr. LF; Alex Kavka, jr. C.; Tim Foley, jr. 1B-DH:  Ben Beckas, soph. 3B-P; Jacob Adams, soph. 3B-P; Joe Delpup, soph. OF.

KEY LOSSES: Brian Portelli, OF (All-State in 2010); Tyler Drabek, INF.

NOTABLES:After playing home games at Oakland University last season and most of its games on the road, Avondale will unveil its new baseball facility later this season. This team has all the tools for a bounce back year, with multiple third- and fourth-year veterans, plenty of solid arms and a potent lineup. There are a couple of nice prospects now up on varsity which could add depth for a team eager to challenge for a league title in the revamped OAA, which places team geographically into four divisions. Avondale will participate in the OAA-Blue.

Auburn Hills Oakland Christian

HEAD COACH: Brad Pyke, second season.

2011 RECORD: 6-22, 1-13 MIAC Blue Division.

2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 4 district finals to Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest (13-1).

RETURNING STARTERS: Luke Combs, sr. SS-P (All-League); Jake Vandervent, sr. 1B; Chris Golus, jr. 3B; Josh Crane, jr. P; JJ Schomer, soph. 2B.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Cliff Baxter, sr. P.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Rafael Eigenmann, sr. C (2011 Under Armour All-American; transferred from Waterford Kettering). Stu Sutherland, soph. P-OF (transferred from Clarkston).

KEY LOSSES: Mark Levon, jr. (transferred to Adams).

NOTABLES: After being a state powerhouse in the late 198-0s and early 1990s, eventually reaching the Class D Final Four in 1991, this team has been all over the map for the better part of two decades. Coach Pyke hopes to remedy that by trying to build interest in the program and keeping kids in the program throughout their middle school and high school years. Although with several unproven underclassmen on the roster, there are five returning starters, plus a pair of transfers that should have an impact.

Clarkston

HEAD COACH: Phil Price, 14th season.

2011 RECORD: 24-9, 10-6 OAA Red Division (third).

2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 1 regional finals to Hartland (12-7).

RETURNING STARTERS: Dylan Peck, sr. C (All-League); Jake Forest, sr. P-SS.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Ryan Slaughter, P-INF; Alex Barta, sr. OF; Chris Dickey, jr. 3B; Nick Mazzone, jr. OF.

KEY NEWCOMERS: D.J.Zezula, fr. OF-INF-P; Ryan Rea, soph. OF; Jordan Cox, Jacob LaPorte, Sean Martens, Jacob O’Berry, Alex Peck, Jordan Robak, Kyle Savoie, Wes Sielaff, Eric Tait.

KEY LOSSES: Matt Rodgers, sr. P-1B (All-League;Lincoln C.C.); Chase Toth, OF (All-League; Michigan State); Jake Sims, 2B; Jered Sperry, OF-P; Jassiel Gonzales, 3B (All-State Second Team; Trine University); Justin Baetz, OF; Andrew Fairse, P-OF-INF (Kalamazoo College); Vinny Siwicki, OF; 14 total players graduated, plus another opted not to play this season.

NOTABLES: Clarkston reached the Division 1 Sweet 16 each of the past two years with a seasoned, veteran team, but faces a season of uncertainly with only two returning starters and six players who saw significant time on varsity last spring. There are some talented newcomers in the wheel, but the coaching staff is faced with the retooling project of seeing what lineup works best and who emerges to from the best rotation. That comes in a deep OAA, where there are several teams in each of the league’s four divisions with ample talent. The Wolves are usually one of the better OAA teams. Where they fall in 2012 remains to be seen.

Clarkston Springfield Christian

HEAD COACH: James Day, sixth season.

2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Did not play in MACS postseason last year.

NOTABLES: Due to low numbers with upperclassmen, the Eagles will only play a junior varsity and junior-high levels this season with hopes to building back a program. There is vast interest in in the lower grades and a higher enrollment in grades 7-10, meaning the program should hopefully be restored to a varsity status in a couple more years.

Holly

HEAD COACH:

2011 RECORD:

2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 1 district semifinals to Milford (2-1).

RETURNING STARTERS:

OTHER KEY RETURNEES:

KEY NEWCOMERS:

KEY LOSSES:

NOTABLES:

Lake Orion

HEAD COACH: Andy Schramek, 14th season.

2011 RECORD: 25-7, 12-4 OAA Red Division (second).

2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 1 pre-district to Rochester Adams (12-9).

RETURNING STARTERS: Dalton Oveson, jr. P-OF (third-year starter); Roman Kuster,  jr. C-P; Jacob Gardner, sr. INF-P (signed to Hillsdale College); Nick Deeg, jr. INF-P; Nick Vogelmeier, jr. INF; Derek Delauara, jr. INF.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Brad Schaenzer, soph. P-INF; Ryan Lambrect, jr. INF.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Nolan Page, jr.; Zack Maresh, jr.; Connor Grant, soph.; Josh Bays, soph.; Travis Shufflin, soph.; Dan Hunter, soph.; Brandon Clements, jr.

KEY LOSSES: Cody Campbell, jr. P-OF (transferred to Naperville, Ill.); Zack Zott, P-OF (Michigan); Brett Wyss, SS; Cole Schaenzer, P-OF (Valparaiso); Conner Hopkins, INF.

NOTABLES: Since taking over the reins in 1999, Schramek has helped the Dragons into a model of consistency as one of the premier teams in Oakland County. This program has won at least 20 ball games in 11 of the previous 13 seasons, with just 19 wins coming in 2010 and 16 wins coming in 1999. Often cracking the state rankings each year, the Dragons have not, however, won a district since its state championship season in 2007 (31 wins that year). This team has a great young pitching staff and a potent batting lineup. Could this team help the Dragons return to at least the regional round of play and back to the top of the OAA red Division? All indications point to a fine season. Lake Orion will challenge at multiple levels.

Lake Orion Baptist

HEAD COACH: Cole Welby, first season.

2011 RECORD: 5-11-1, 4-4 FBAC (second).

2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in MACS quarterfinals to Davison Faith Baptist

KEY RETURNEES: James Noruk, sr. SS-C-P (All-League); Eli Cone, sr. 1B-OF;  Mark Dewar, soph. C-P-SS; Jason Noruk, soph.P-1B; Micah Bryson, fr. 2B-SS; Jacob Noruk, fr. 3B; Josh Jenkins, fr. OF; Ben Case, jr. OF Andrew Schwartz, soph. OF-2B; Luke Strunk, fr. OF; Daniel Harris, fr. OF.

KEY NEWCOMERS: None.

KEY LOSSES: Conner Welby, P-C-INF (All-League).

NOTABLES: Cole Welby takes over the helm from his father, Bill Welby, for a program that has done quite well despite being a small-school team; the Lions, now in their 10th season have finished first or second in the FBAC in each of their first nine years, but dipped below the .500 mark for the first time last spring. With only one player lost to graduation and 10 letterwinners back, this team hopes to challenge Troy Bethany Christian in the FBAC this season and climb back over the .500 fence.

Ortonville Brandon

HEAD COACH: Joel Dohm, fifth season.

2011 RECORD: 20-13, 13-3 Flint Metro League

2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 1 district semifinals to Davison.

RETURNING STARTERS: Derek Darling, sr. OF (third-year varsity starter); Ben Crawford, sr. OF-P (third-year varsity starter; All-League); Zack Fernandez, sr. C (third-year varsity starter; All-District); Ryan Barnes, sr. SS (third-year varsity starter; All-League Honorable Mention); Jack Haranc, jr. 1B-P (All-League First Team).

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Dylan Everett, sr. OF-INF; Michael Tagliavia, sr. OF-P-1B; Max Wardell, soph. P-OF; J.T Stricklin, sr. OF.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Jake Sutherland, soph. 3B-P; Blake Rehahn, soph. 2B-P-C; Jarod Tiernan, jr. 2B-OF.

KEY LOSSES: Brian Baker, Justin Roberts.

NOTABLES: Brandon only loses two key players from a squad that finished second in the nine-school FML, which signals that this team could again compete for a league title. There are four players in their third season as starters, three players that earned some type of all-conference recognition and nine total players with varsity experience, making this a veteran squad.

Oxford

HEAD COACH: Jeff Willis, fourth season.

2011 RECORD: 2-23, 1-15 OAA Red Division (ninth).

2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 1 district semifinals to Romeo (1-0).

RETURNING STARTERS: Kyle Hartwick, sr. C (All-League; signed Rend Lake C.C.); Matt Economou, sr. OF; Mike Kitchner, sr. P-OF (injured last season); Matt Zitny, sr. P-INF; Collin McGeen, jr. CF; Ryan Kitching, jr. 2B.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Nate Brubaker, jr. OF; Jeremy White, soph. LF-P; Sean Donaldson, jr. SS.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Tyler Hunsucker, sr. 3B-DH; Vinnie Griffith, jr. 3B-OF; Nate Morris, soph. 1B-P.

KEY LOSSES: Keith Paslean, P-OF; John Pesta, INF (Concordia-Ann Arbor); Clayton Spiker, INF.

NOTABLES: Oxford suffered through a major rebuilding campaign after serving as a quality team for much of the previous decade, including winning a district in 2008. With only two wins to its credit and multiple returnees back this season, there’s no excuses for Oxford to suffer through a season like 2011. Look for Oxford to ease its way back towards the .500 mark this spring and be a team that no one wants to play come June. The Wildcats may not win n championships this season, but will be far from a pushover this time around.

Pontiac

HEAD COACH:

2011 RECORD: 6-20, 4-8 OAA White Division (fifth).

Rochester

HEAD COACH: Eric Mageira, third season.

2011 RECORD: 13-16-1, 6-9-1 OAA Red Division (seventh).

2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 1 district semifinals to Troy (3-2).

RETURNING STARTERS: Evan Surinck, sr. P-INF; John Michelon, sr. INF-P; Mike Klotz, sr. P-INF; Justin Bommarito, sr. C-INF; Shane Sullivan, sr. C-OF; Spiro Pliakos, soph. 2B (All-State Honorable Mention in soccer).

OTHER RETURNEES: Mike Klotz, sr. P-INF.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Jake Tobin, jr. P-OF; Max Harper, fr.INF; John Doroshewitz, jr. OF; Michael Halsey, fr. INF-P; Jacob Seidl, sr. OF; Matt Beckstrom, jr. P-INF; Ryan Mahan, jr. OF; Andrew Bauer, soph. P-OF; Jack Devine, jr. P-INF; Connor Pacella, soph. P-INF.

KEY LOSSES: Nick Bradley, P-INF (four-year starter; three time All-League; played in All-Star Game last June; playing at Western Michigan); Chris Saber, P-INF; Mike Kmiec, OF; Trevor Elliott, INF-P; Nick Reed, C; Miles Dale, jr. P-OF(injured).

NOTABLES: What killed the Falcons the second half of last season was the bats went ice cold. Many of Rochester’s seniors batted around .200, leaving the pitching staff of Bradley, Saber and Klotz with several close losses. Rochester will lack star power with the graduation of Bradley, perhaps one of the better all-time Falcons but has some promising young talent coming up through the ranks that will make them competitive in the future. Like a lot of other teams in the area, Rochester likely won’t win a league championship, but will likely knock off a couple of teams and make the league race interesting.

Rochester Adams

HEAD COACH: Jeff Hall, second season.

2011 RECORD: 14-15-1, 4-11-1 OAA Red Division (eighth place).

2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost to Rochester Stoney Creek in Division 1 district semifinals (9-7).

RETURNING STARTERS: Alex Taylor, sr. 3B-2B-OF-P (All-League, All-District, All-Region, All-State, All-Area; hit a school record 10 home runs last year with 46 RBI); Sean Beyer, sr. P (third-year varsity player; Alex Borglin, sr. INF-OF (third-year varsity; signed with Central Michigan; hit .404 as sophomore and .368 as junior; has had 49 RBI the past two seasons).

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Jeff Turnbull, sr. P-OF; Mason Grant, jr. P-OF-INF; Nick Balsei, jr. P-OF; Alex Chambery, sr. P-INF; Ben Hart, sr. INF.

KEY LOSSES: Matt Nestor, P-OF (three-year starter, pitcher at Western Michigan; finished in top five of many Highlanders game, season and career pitching records); Ian Mercer, SS (three-year starter); Tony Annese, sr. OF (transferred back to Hartland).

NOTABLES: Adams only has four players who had over 45 at-bats last season, leaving multiple gaps in the lineup in terms of experience. The Highlanders figure to do it with pitching this season with a more seasoned staff. Adams ventured through a rebuilding campaign in 2011 after reaching the D-1 state quarterfinals in 2010. The Highlanders likely won’t win the OAA red Division this season, but will definitely keep teams honest and gain their fair share of wins.

Rochester Stoney Creek

HEAD COACH: Clint Rodger, 10th season.

2011 RECORD: 23-8, 13-3 OAA Red Division (first).

2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 1 district finals to Romeo (7-6).

RETURNING STARTERS: Zak Northrup, sr. P-SS-OF (All-District pitcher last year with a 7-1 record and four saves; signed with Hillsdale College); Niko Gonzalez, sr. C (fourth-year starter); Mike DeFrancis, sr. P-OF (third-year starter); Joe Cox, soph. P-OF (played in every game a freshman last season); Sean Scullen, soph. P-INF.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Brandon Arduino, sr.NF-OF (signed to play football at Adrian College); Connor Dean, sr. P; Austin Klozk, sr. C-INF-OF.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Eric Gilgenbach, fr.INF-P (starter on varsity basketball team this year); Kyle Walsh, jr. P (state qualifier in swimming); Jake Kruk, jr. OF (state qualifier in tennis).

KEY LOSSES: Trent Drumheller, INF-OF (playing baseball at Oakland); Ben Yax, SS (All-State; playing baseball at Adrian College); Jake Miller, 2B; Mike McKinley, INF (four-year starter).

NOTABLES: After winning their first-ever OAA Red Division title on the final weekend last season and just their second overall conference championship, the Cougars reached the district finals for the first time only to suffer a couple of bad innings and losing by a run to Romeo. This team graduated four solid players, but by no means is this squad going to fade much. Expect Stoney Creek to challenge Lake Orion for top honors in the OAA-Red this season and to make another go in the postseason. This team has enough talent to make a decent run come June.

Rochester Hills Christian

HEAD COACH: Jon Armitage, first season.

2011 RECORD: 7-12, 1-7 FBAC (third).

2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in MACS opener to Temperance Stateline Christian.

RETURNING STARTERS: Jon Armitage, jr. C-P; Jesse Montgomery, soph. 2B; Michael Migliore, soph. LF; Brandon Rodriguez, soph. OF-INF; Dan Bermeister, sr. OF; Misael Hernandez, soph. SS-P.

KEY NEWCOMERS:

KEY LOSSES: Kyle Vandenburgh, OF; Jon Becker, P-OF.

NOTABLES: This team is slowly making a comeback, more than doubling its three wins from 2010 to last season despite having a roster of mostly freshmen and sophomores. There were only two players lost to graduation, meaning that the comeback trail should continue this season, although under a new skipper.

Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest

HEAD COACH: Brett Borrocci, first season.

2011 RECORD: 19-13, 9-7 MIAC Blue Division (third).

2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: District and regional champions; lost in Division 4 state quarterfinals to Merrill (2-1).

RETURNING STARTERS: Cameron Morris, sr. OF; Justin Novack, jr. INF-P-OF; Matthew Mischley, jr. INF-P; Colin Sheehan, sr.1B (committed to Olivet College for football); Chad Cook, sr. INF-P; Travis Kersten, sr. C; Josh Morrison, jr. OF.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Christian Woodfin, sr. OF-P; Ian Wellhousen, jr. P-OF; Evan Carver, jr. C.

KEY NEWCOMERS:  Nick Grunewald, fr. INF.

KEY LOSSES: Eric Mischley, P-OF (All-State); Luke McCatty, P-INF (Oakland).

NOTABLES: This team put it all together in the postseason last year, making a run to the state quarterfinals and within one hit of reaching the Final Four, a destination they Crusaders reached in 2004 (state champs) and 2006. If Northwest is to come remotely close to that again, it will have to replace its top two pitchers who were brilliant down the stretch last season. There is talent on this team, but the Crusaders will need its younger players to mature in a heartbeat and fill some gaps left by graduation.

Troy

HEAD COACH: Jim Ellis, second season.

2011 RECORD: 15-16-1, 8-8 OAA Red Division (tied-fifth).

2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 1 district finals to Utica Eisenhower (5-4).

RETURNING STARTERS: Tyler Horne, sr. INF; Tyler Smith, sr. OF: Nick Guitar, sr. INF; John Wassel, sr. INF; Matt Oppenlander, sr. C.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Dereck Verbruggen, sr. OF; Luke McCloskey, sr. OF; Jesse Dubay, sr. INF; Chris Michael, sr. P.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Justin Losey, jr. OF; Andrew, Braun, jr. 1B; Jake Provenzano, jr. OF; Michael Thomas, jr. P.

KEY LOSSES: Peter Gebara, 1B; Dan Essian, C-P; Nick Krajewski, OF.

NOTABLES: In Ellis’ first season, the Colts were somewhat erratic in their overall play, sometimes being dominant and other times all over the map. This season the Colts will be one of the top teams in the newly-created OAA Blue Division along with Royal Oak and Auburn Hills Avondale. A bulk of this team returns intact, although Troy did lose three quality players. If the pitching holds up and the Colts stay healthy, something that plagued them last spring, then this team is worthy of a league and district title.

Troy Athens

HEAD COACH: Mike Morris, eighth season.

2011 RECORD: 16-13, 9-7OAA Red Division (fourth).

2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 1 district semifinals to Utica Eisenhower (4-3).

RETURNING STARTERS: Tommy Eng, sr. 3B-SS (fourth-year starter);

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Ryan Norman, sr. P-OF; Andrew Davenport, sr. 2B.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Grant Sweeney, soph. P-INF. There are 10 newcomers on the roster and a boatload of underclassmen.

KEY LOSSES: Ira Land, 2B-P (three-year starter); David Mandziara, CF; Jacob Barger, C; Alex Harrison, P-OF (three-year starter); Travis Kassak, OF; Sam Koelzer, 1B-P-OF; Chris Harris, DH-1B; Hayato Ando, jr..P-3B (foreign exchange student from Japan last season); Anthony Carrillo, OF-P (played one year at Athens after transferring from California).

NOTABLES: With the shift of the OAA to four divisions, Athens moved down to the OAA Blue Division this season. That could end up helping the Red Hawks, as the OAA-Red, their former home is loaded and Athens lost eight starters from last year’s team. There are more question marks than certainties this season and this team is slated for a major rebuilding season.

Troy Bethany Christian

HEAD COACH: Mark Nowak, fourth season.

2011 RECORD: 16-7, 8-0 FBAC (first).

2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Won Michigan Association of Christian Schools state championship, defeating Davison Faith Baptist in the finals (11-9).

RETURNING STARTERS: Tyler Parsons, sr. C (All-League); Noah Francis, jr. 3B-P (All-League); Ryan Woodham, jr. 2B; Bret Hayhurst, jr. CF; Landon Cathers, jr. OF-P

OTHER RETURNEES: Devin Goff, soph. 1B-OF.

KEY LOSSES: Travis Woodham, SS-P (All-League; league MVP in soccer and basketball); Luke Combs, P-INF (All-League); Mike Brewer, OF.

NOTABLES: The Bruins return all but three of their players from last year’s MACS state championship team, but must replace its No.1 and No. 4 starter, plus two all-conference players. Pitching will be the key for this group. If some of the younger arms step up, then this group should at least challenge for a league title and beyond.

Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes-

Clarkston Everest Collegiate Unified

HEAD COACH: Joe DeLilse, first season.

2011 RECORD: Not available.

2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 4 district semifinals to Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest (4-1).

RETURNING STARTERS: Ben Kotz, sr. SS-P; Mitchell Lasceski, jr. C-1B-OF; Eric Suran, jr. C-2B; Colt Moran, jr. 3B-P; Steven Scott, soph. SS-P.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Spencer Holloway, soph. P-OF; Vinny Puma, soph. P-1B; Thomas Lannen, jr. 2B-OF.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Ben Bellestri, fr. P-2B-3B; Adam Goeringer, soph. P-1B; Sal Mastramatteo, fr. OF-P; Lucas Neme, fr. OF-C; Sean Thomas, soph. OF-P; Jake Glover, fr. 2B-P; Jack Safko, fr. 3B-P; Billy Mattise, soph. 3B-C-P.

KEY LOSSES: Austin Karbowski, P-OF; Jared Ritch, C-OF.

NOTABLES: The Lakers have a new skipper in Joe Delilse and hope for the future. There were only two key players that graduated and with the arrival of a solid freshmen class means this team will likely go up the next couple of years. What makes WOLL so intriguing is its versatility, as most of the players can play a multitude of position, plus 12 of the players have pitching experience. There are five freshmen and five sophomores on the roster, so the inexperience factor could haunt WOLL in the present but pay dividends in the future.
