SOFTBALL: Falcons win Anchor Bay Invitational to up winning streak to 10 games

| April 25, 2012 | Comments (0)

NEW BALTIMORE — Rochester turned some heads Saturday with a win over last year’s Division 1 state runer-up, New Baltimore Anchor Bay. That was just a sliver of the Falcons’ accomplishments on the afternoon.

Rochester finished with a 5-0 record to win the anchor Bay tournament, just the latest building block in the Falcons’ resurgence the past couple of years in softball.

Rochester defeated Marysville (8-2), D-1 eighth-ranked Anchor Bay (5-2) and Bad Axe (5-4) in pool play. The Falcons came back to down St. Clair (9-3) in the semifinals, then rallied back from a 3-0 deficit against Macomb Dakota in the finals before posting an 8-6 win.

Freshman Haley Lenderman came of age in the pitcher’s circle for Rochester, winning four of the five games with an ERA of 2.35 to go with 17 strikeouts.

Leading the Falcons’ attack was junior Mackenzie Duff, who batted .667 with 10 hits, three home runs and two doubles.  Senior Maggie Irvine hit .571 with eight hits, one home run, five doubles and seven RBI. Sophomore Maddie Williams hit .583 with seven hits, three doubles and eight RBI, junior Sarah Schedlbauer hit .429 with six hits, one home run and four RBI, including the walk-off RBI in the win over Bad Axe.

Rochester held its own defensively, only committing seven errors in five games and made clutch plays with the leather at the right times.

With the five wins in the tournament, Rochester has now won 10 straight overall.  The Falcons improved to 11-2 overall, its best start in many years.

Rochester hosts Birmingham Groves Wednesday 4 p.m. for an OAA White Division double-header.
