FOOTBALL: Country Day holds off Notre Dame Prep

PONTIAC — Cotter Lamb prevented Birmingham Detroit Country Day from having to work some overtime on the line Saturday evening.

DCD’s senior lineman stopped Pontiac Notre Dame Prep quarterback Brenden Newvine’s two-point conversion attempt with 1:19 to play, as the Yellowjackets hung on for a 14-12 victory over the Fighting Irish in a Division 4 district final in Pontiac.

Newvine had scored on a 4-yard scamper moments earlier to bring the Fighting Irish (9-2) within two points.

Richie Wilson scored on a 1-yard TD run to put DCD (9-2) up for good. Jacob Hill’s punt return down to the Notre Dame Prep 4 set up the game-winning points late in the third quarter.

Wilson had 54 yards on 16 carries for DCD, as both defenses limited few yards throughout the contest. Tyler Wiegers finished 8-for-15 for 83 yards and a touchdown.

Country Day scored first with 2:19 left in the opening quarter, when Maurice Ways hauled in a 21-yard strike from Wiegers. DCD led 7-0 at the half.

Newvine finished  8-for-20 for 129 yards for Notre Dame Prep. He scored on an 11-yard run in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 14-6 for NDP, which held a 152-144 edge in total yards.
