FOOTBALL: St. Mary’s runs by Avondale

| November 6, 2012 | Comments (0)

ORCHARD LAKE — It’s not as decisive as 2010’s 71-49 decision over Auburn Hills Avondale. Yet Orchard Lake St. Mary’s 49-14 victory over the Yellowjackets Saturday was still in the lopsided fashion.

Defending Division 3 state champion St. Mary’s took another step closer to defending its crown, using a 280-7 third quarter to pull away.

The Eaglets (9-2) led 21-7 at the half.

Grant Niemiec finished with 150 carries on 13 attempts with touchdown runs of 1, 42 and 57 yards, while and Parker McInnis added 117 yards on 15 carries with TD runs of 7 and 10 yards for St. Mary’s.

St. Mary’s McInnis and Avondale’s Michael Johnson traded off 7-yard touchdowns runs, as the two teams were tied at 7-7 at the end of the first quarter. That was as close as Avondale would get.

Niemiec scored on his runs of 1 and 46 yards to pout th Eaglets up 21-7 at the break.

Jalen Watts-Jackson’s 55-yard punt return, Nathan Conrad’s 28-yard touchdown reception off a pass from Matt Linehan and McInnis’ 10-yard scamper put St. Mary’s in complete control at 42-7.

Johnson’s 92-yard kickoff return was Avondale’s last ray of hope in the fourth quarter. Niemiec quickly erased those hopes with a 57-yard TD sprint of his own moments later.
