BOYS BASKETBALL: Oakland Christian edges Lakes; Lutheran Northwest thumps Mooney; Academy of Excellence rolls

WATERFORD — Behind an 18014 fourth quarter, Auburn Hills Oakland Christian upended Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes 58-54 in a non-conference boys basketball contest Tuesday.

Chris Polite picked up 12 points and five steals in the victory for the Lancers (1-0).

Eric Unger, Javarian Smith and Chase Sumner all scored eight and John VanNoord and DJ Stevens added seven points apiece for Oakland Christian.

WOLL led 14-13 after the first qjuarter and 27-26 at the half. Both teams traded off 13 points in the third quarter to tie the game at 40-40 entering the final period of play.

Garrett Ross scored 15 points and Jake Doetsch followed with 13 points for Waterford Lakes (0-1). Zach Collier added eight points for WOLL.

ROCHESTER HILLS LUTHERAN HIGH NORTHWEST 65, MARINE CITY CARDINAL MOONEY 53:  A 39-31 run in the second half helped Northwest widened its lead and lead to a season-opening win Tuesday over visiting Cardinal Mooney.

Nathan Drews canned 21 points to pace the Crusaders, who led 26-22 at the half. Josh Morrison added 18 points, including 7-for-7 from the foul line, and Greg Maynard tossed in seven points for host Northwest (1-0), which finished 16-for-20 from the charity stripe.

David Sharpe paced Cardinal Mooney with a game-high 27 points.

PONTIAC ACADEMY OF EXCELLENCE 63, DETROIT MICHIGAN MATH AND SCIENCE ACADEMY 14: Deon Sears tossed in 26 points and added five assists and the Cougars opened up their boys basketball season in grand fashion Tuesday.

Jordan Jones added nine points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals for PAOE (1-0).

FLINT KEARSLEY 68, HOLLY 60: David Sedich scored 16 and Brendan Silvas added 13 points for the Hornets in this Flint Metro League win.

Freshman Kyle Woodruff drilled six 3-pointers and scored 22 points for Holly (0-1, 0-1). Morgan Baylis added 14 points for the Bronchos, who made 12 threes in the contest.

Kearsley (1-0, 1-0) used a 21-12 first quarter to create distance and led 39-32 at the half. The Hornets outscored Holly 29-28 in the second half.
