GIRLS BASKETBALL: WOLL advances to regional finals
LANSING — As the three-time defending state champions in Class D, Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes is finding the road to a fourth straight Final Four a little more difficult.
The Lakers had to grind out its third win this season over Marine City Cardinal Mooney, holding on for a 40-33 victory Tuesday at Lansing Christian.
Waterford Lakes outscored Mooney 24-17 in the second half to pull away.
The Lakers led 7-4 by the end of the first quarter, only to see Cardinal Mooney rally back with a 12-9 second quarter to tie the game at 16-16 at the half.
Behind a 13-7 third quarter, WOLL pulled ahead for good.
Ava Doetsch scored a game-high 21 points for Waterford Lakes (18-4). Lexie Robak added eight points and Anna Robb scored six for the Lakers.
Katie Theut scored eight, Erin Armstrong added seven points and both Maddie Southers and Hannah Armstrong scored six each for Mooney (16-7).
