SATURDAY’S BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Troy sweeps Rochester; Avondale splits with Fenton
TROY — Behind a 21-run explosion, Troy swept Rochester in a OAA crossover baseball doubleheader 7-4 and 14-11.
David Eicher gained the win on the mound in the opener for Troy (6-2). He struck out just one batter, but gave up just four hits and three earned runs. Tyler Horne gained the save by punching out three Falcons and giving up just one hit over three innings of work.
Derrick Verbruggan was 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and John Wassel was 3-for-3 and also drove home two runs for the Colts.
Matt Suronek was 3-for-3 with an RBI for Rochester (4-4-1).
Troy had 16 hits in Game 2. Jessie Dubay was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Tyler Horne drove in two runs and was 2-for-4 for Troy. Matt Oppenlander was the pitcher of record, throwing three innings and allowing three runs and just three hits.
Suronek came back and was 3-for-4 with two RBI in Game 2 for Rochester, which led 5-0 after the first inning but could not hold onto the momentum.
FENTON 11-7, AUBURN HILLS AVONDALE 1-18: Both teams posted a rout in this non-league twinbill Saturday in Fenton.
Fenton took Game 1, as Patrick Leaske gained the win on the mound with a three-hitter and three strikeouts. Josh Bryant scored twice and was 3-for-3 with two RBI.
Dylan Ahern had a double among his two hits in the opener.
In Game 2, Avondale gained some revenge by grabbing a 3-1 after the first inning and cruising from that point. The Yellowjackets added two in the second, four in the third, a run in the fourth, two in the fifth and six in the seventh.
Joe Davison scored five runs and was 4-for-6 in the nightcap. Mitch Robinson was 4-for-6 with four RBI for Avondale (6-4).
Brady Sarkan was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBI for Fenton.
