ROCHESTER HILLS — Rochester Stoney Creek has put together one of its best girls volleyball seasons to date this fall. The Cougars added another chapter totheir success story Tuesday evening.
Stoney Creek captured the Rochester City Cup for the second straight season — the first time the Cougars have repeated as champions at the 10th annual event — to add to their resume.
The Cougars defeated Rochester Adams (25-17), 25-18) and Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest (25-7, 25-14) before topping Rochester (25-23, 25-18) in the final match to go 3-0-0 and grab the title.
“I wasn’t the coach until July, but I guess this is one of our better seasons,” said Stoney Creek coach Adrienne Leone, a former Oakland University player who got the coaching job only a month before the start of tryouts. “We have played really well in our league and at some tournaments. And we won the City Cup.”
Freshman outside hitter Sami Sattman, senior setter Alexa Caporusico and senior middle hitter Jesse Sattman led the Cougars to the City Cup title. It marked the first time that all games at the four-school tournament finished up in straight sets.
Rochester posted a 2-1 record at the tourney, while Adams finished 1-2 and Lutheran Northwest 0-3.
It has truly been a banner year for Stoney Creek (25-12-3), which won the OAA White Division for the first time. The Cougars captured the OAA Blue Division last season with a 7-0 record and, after a promotion up a division in the 25-school OAA, ventured through the OAA-White this season with another 7-0 mark.
“It might be the first time we’ve won two straight league titles,” offered Leone. “We have come together real nice this season. We defeated Rochester at the City Cup, we beat Lake Orion at a tournament and we’ve beat some other good teams. Rochester defeated us in the districts the past two years. The girls really wanted to beat Rochester.”
Rochester, under second-year coach Lauren Duquette, a teammate of Leone at Oakland, has posted a 14-19-4 record this season.
“We have played much better than last year, even though our record doesn’t show it,” offered Duquette. “Our record in the league isn’t very good (1-7), but we have played better. We’ve entered a lot of better tournaments. It seems that we have already played half of the top 10 and some teams that have been honorable mention in the rankings.
Rochester swept both Adams (25-19, 25-18) and Lutheran Northwest (25-18, 25-5). The Falcons were paced by senior setter Sara Sikorski, who is headed to Ferris State, junior outside hitter Katie Wiacek, senior libero Mikayla Baxter and junior middle hitter Monica Williamson.
“We beat Adams at the City Cup and they killed us a month ago in league play,” said Duquette. “That shows how far we have come since the beginning of the season.”
Stoney Creek and Rochester could meet again next week in the Class A district semifinals at Sterling Heights Stevenson. If Rochester can beat Utica in Monday’s pre-district match, the Cougars and Falcons will tangle in the district semifinals for the third year in a row.
Rochester rallied for a five-set win over Stoney Creek in each of the past two state tournaments.
