BOYS BASKETBALL: Holly tips rival Brandon in overtime
ORTONVILLE — Talked about a pressure-cooked situation in hostile territory.
Josh Simms walked to the free throw line with no time left on the clock of overtime and sank a free throw, lifting Holly to a thrilling 67-66 victory over host Ortonville Brandon in a Flint Metro League boys basketball rivalry game.
Simms finished the night going 3-for-4 from the line and scored nine points to aid the Bronchos, who continued their perfect start by moving to 5-0 on the season, 4-0 in conference play.
Jake Daniels sank a trio of three-pointers and scorched the nets with a game-high 26 points to pace Holly. Kyle Woodruff added 18 points on the strength of five three-pointers, Logan Spiker twined seven points and Adam Tooley swiped six steals for the Bronchos.
Brandon, which lost for the second time this week, scored 20 for the Blackhawks. Nick Keller and Jake Sutherland added 16 points apiece and Tyree Gibbs scored eight to keep Brandon (1-4, 1-3) within range until the very end.
Brandon finished the night only 11-for-20 from the line, while Holly was 15-fpor-23 from the charity stripe.
Holly opened up the game with a 25-14 run only to see Brandon fight back with a 16-9 surge in the second quarter to close the gap to 34-30 at the half.
Brandon took the lead in the third quarter at 49-47 thanks to a 19-13 run, only to see Holly soar back and force overtime with a 15-13 edge in the final frame, leaving the score at 62-62 entering the extra session.
