Athens pulls series sweep of Clarkston; Stoney Creek topples Adams
TROY — Two days after being mercied by Troy, Troy Athens returned to its winning ways Wednesday by rallying for an 7-6 win over Clarkston in a showdown between two of the three OAA Red Division baseball leaders.
Athens (8-3) is now tied with Lake Orion with two losses in the conference standings, with Clarkston and Rochester Stoney Creek having three losses apiece.
After falling behind 5-0, Athens scored six runs in the third inning to take a 6-5 lead and held on for the key league win, its second over Clarkston this season to deliver the series sweep of the Wolves. The Red Hawks also defeated Clarkston 2-0 last month.
Alex Harrison got the win on the mound, striking out five. Tommy Eng pitched the final two innings, not allowing a hit while striking out three.
Jacob Barger, David Mandziara and Travis Kassak each had two hits for Athens. Eng and Sam Koelzer added two RBI apiece and Kassak had an RBI for the Red Hawks, who collected 13 hits .
Clarkston is 15-3 and 5-3 in the OAA-Red.
Jassiel Gonzales was 2-for-4, scored twice and plated two other runs for Clarkston, while Matt Rodgers was 2-for-4, scored once and drove in another run.
ROCHESTER STONEY CREEK 8, ROCHESTER ADAMS 6: Mike McKinley belted a three-run home run and had four RBI in leading the Cougars to this OAA Red Division win, which kept them tied in third place in the league. Trent Drumheller was 2-for-2 and scored three times for Stoney Creek (13-5, 6-3). Zak Norhrup stuck out two in two innings of relief to get the win for the Cougars. Alex Taylor had a home run and Matt Nestor added two hits with two RBI for Adams (5-10, 2-7).
