TUESDAY’S BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Pontiac holds off Adams; Brandon rolls by Kettering
PONTIAC — Behind a stealer defensive effort, Pontiac avenged a loss to Rochester Adams in last year’s Class A regional semifinals with a 48-44 OAA crossover boys basketball victory over the Highlanders.
Pontiac built a six-point lead at the half and kept the Highlanders at bay over the final 16 minutes of play.
The Phoenix led 10-3 after the first quarter and 20-14 at the half. Adams used a 17-13 surge to claw to within 33-31 entering the fourth quarter. Pontiac edged Adams 15-13 in the final frame to squeak out the win.
Zack Littleson scores a season-high 17 to pace Adams (3-2). Akhemji Williams added 10 points and James Berger followed with nine points for the Highlanders, who kept the game close by converting 14-of-15 free throws.
Jarod Jones scored 11, Dijon Cogdell added seven points and Vezzie Carthane added six points for Pontiac (5-2).
ORTONVILLE BRANDON 60, WATERFORD KETTERING 33: Cody Feltner led three Brandon players in double figures in pacing this non-conference rout Tuesday in Ortonville.
Quinton Cook chipped in with 14 points and Alex Bageris added 12 points for the Blackhawks.
Brandon (2-5) wasted no time in assuming control, building a 16-7 lead by the end of the first quarter and a 26-18 lead by the half.
The Blackhawks continued to add to the lead in the third quarter with a 21-11 surge building a 47-29 lead. Brandon closed out with a 13-4 run to make the final score 27- point differential.
Maurice Scott scored 18 for Kettering (0-4).
TROY ATHENS 73, ROYAL OAK 45: The Red Hawks won for the fifth time in six games Tuesday, cruising past Royal Oak in this OAA crossover contest.
Caleb McIntosh and Marcarius Coakley combined for 36 points, with McIntosh scoring 19 and Coakley 17 to lead the Red Hawks. Robert Dema added eight points and John Van Hoef and Jeff Koch scored seven apiece for Athens, which sent 11 of 14 players into the scoring column.
Athens led 38-27 at the half and used a 12-5 run in the third quarter and a 23-13 spurt in the fourth quarter to pull away.
ROCHESTER 70, HAZEL PARK 34: A 21-5 run in the first quarter was enough fuel to propel the Flacons to this OAA crossover win.
Rochester led 37-16 by the half and extended the lead to 59-22 through three quarters of play.
Paris Pereira led Rochester (6-1) with 19 points. Mike Murri added 15 points and Taylor Perry scored 12 for the Falcons.
Gary Turner scored 14 for Hazel Park (1-4).
CLARKSTON EVEREST COLLEGIATE 56, STERLING HEIGHTS PARKWAY CHRISTIAN 52: Everest Collegiate used a 14-8 run in the second quarter to build a 36-31 lead at the half and held on during the final two frames to record the non-league road win Tuesday in Sterling Heights.
Richie Cross led a balanced attack with 17 points. Blake Beauchamp added 11 points, David Smith scored eight and Donald Allen chipped in with six points for the Mountaineers (4-2).
Parkway outscored Everest 21-20 in the second half. Kenny Dalen scored 20 and Jonny Kocik added 16 points for the Eagles.
