Athens-Avondale vaults way to OAA gymnastics title

TROY— After playing the bridesmaid role to Farmington Unified the past several years, the Troy Athens/Avondale Unified gymnastics team claimed top honors at Thursday’s OAA league championships.
The Red Hawks picked up a 147.400 total, and had the highest score in each of the four events, to nip defending champion Farmington Unified, which was a close second with 146.050 points.
Troy finished third with 138.025 points, the Colts’ highest total at the league meet in more than a decade, while Farmington Harrison (134.100) and Birmingham United (133.425) rounded out the team scores.
Athens-Avondale had the best team effort on the vault (35.825), bars (36.625), beam (37.350) and floor exercise (37.600) to prevail.
Ashley Moskal of Athens-Avondale won the Division I all-around with 37.9000 points, with Farmington Unified’s Kristen McKelvey earning the silver (37.325).
In the Division II all-around, Jaclynn Stewart of Athens-Avondale posted a tournament-high of 37.050. Koyo Yamamoto of Farmington was second (36.750) and Amanda Lumley of Farmington taking the bronze (36.750). Stephanie Sanders of Harrison was the fourth-place finisher at 36.600.
Moskal won the D-I beam (9.650) and floor (.9.500) to pace Athens-Avondale
In D-II, Lumley took the vault (9.150) and floor (9.800), while Yamamoto the bars (9.500) and beam (9.600).
