OU’s Watterworth named Summit League Player of the Week
ROCHESTER HILLS — After averaging 22 points and helping the Oakland women’s basketball team to a pair of wins, Bethany Watterworth was named The Summit League Player of the Week, announced by the league office on Tuesday. The 5-foot-11 junior from Lake Orion, Mich., earns the award for the fifth time in her career and the first time this season.
Watterworth equaled her career-high with five 3-pointers as she went 11-for-16 from the floor and scored 27 points to lead Oakland in a 54-50 win over IUPUI on Saturday. In addition to providing half of the Golden Grizzlies’ scoring, she also added eight rebounds and two steals in the victory.
On Monday, Watterworth scored 11 points in the first 4:04 of the game to help Oakland beat Western Illinois 75-71 at the Athletics Center O’rena. Watterworth finished with 17 points, three assists and two blocks, as she went over 1,250 points for her career.
For the week, Watterworth averaged 22 points, 5.5 rebounds and two assists. She also had eight of the team’s 11 3-pointers, hitting 57.1 percent from long range, while shooting 53.3 percent from the field and going 4-of-4 at the free-throw line.
The Golden Grizzlies and Watterworth return to action on Saturday when they face IPFW at 4:30 p.m. on at War Memorial Coliseum.
