GIRLS BASKETBALL: Lapeer West downs Holly in FML showdown; Avondale, Rochester record lopsided wins
HOLLY — A rare chance to win a league championship was not in the stars for Holly’s girls basketball team Friday.
The Bronchos, who have not won a league title in 18 years, were no match for Flint Metro League leader Lapeer West Friday, as the visiting Panthers wiped out the Bronchos’ chances with a 46-28 schlacking.
Lapeer West (15-3, 13-2) now owns sole possession of first place in the nine-school league entering the final week of the regular season.
Shannon Brown and Madison Smith both scored nine points to lead Lapeer West’s balanced effort. Yazmin Dababneh added seven points for the Panthers, who shot 14-for-22 from the foul line in the rout.
Holly (!4-4, 12-3) led 8-3 after the first quarter, but the young Bronchos could not sustain the momentum.
Lapeer West used a 15-6 second quarter to turn a five-point deficit into a 18-14 lead at the half.
The Panthers pulled away with a 13-5 run in the third quarter and a 15-9 surge in the final period.
Allyssa Copley scored 10 for Holly, which shot only 13-for-22 from the charity stripe in the loss.
AUBURN HILLS AVONDALE 51, TROY 35: Avondale remained one game back of OAA Red Division leader Clarkston Friday with this road win.
Hannah Little scored 16, Daja Whiteside added eight points and Quennece Garrison scored seven for Avondale (12-6, 9-3).
Sabria Cotton scored 12 and Karin Moss added nine points for Troy (9-9, 4-8), which dropped its fourth straight game.
ROCHESTER 57, BIRMINGHAM GROVES 37: Rochester captured its six win of the year, double of last season, with this 20-point victory over host Groves Friday in OAA White Division play.
Zhana Randolph scored 13, Anne Tucker added 12 points and Stephanie VonBehren scored eight for Rochester (6-12, 5-7), which led 30-11 at the half and 44-19 through three quarters.
Alexis Tillery scored 10 for Groves.
