SOFTBALL: Athens sweeps West Bloomfield
TROY— Behind a sweep, Troy Athens remained in the hunt for the OAA White Division softball title with a pair of victories over West Bloomfield.
The Red Hawks claimed the opener, 4-3, and came back to win the nightcap, 3-1.
In the opener, Athens scored twice in the third and had single runs in the fifth and seventh innings. Melissa Palmer scored winning run in bottom of the seventh, after lacing a single, stealing second and crossing the plate on a single by Meg Richter
Haley Zemmer was 3-for-3 including two doubles with two RBI for the Red Hawks. Palmer scored twice and was 2-for-4 in Game 1.
West Bloomfield scored a single run in the second and tied the game at 3-3 with two runs in the sixth. Allison Kus had a home run for the Lakers.
Zemmer closed the door on the Lakers (8-6, 3-3) with eight strikeouts, two walks and five hits over seven innings of work.
In Game 2, Zemmer pitched a one-hitter with five strikeouts in the win and helped her own cause by going 2-for-3 with a triple. Palmer was 2-for-4 with an RBI double and Erica Siismets finished 2-for-3.
The Red Hawks (16-4-1, 6-0) plated a run in the third and two in the fifth while allowing the Lakers just one run in the fourth frame.
