LAKE ORION — After suffering the pain of being an upset victim the past two seasons, Clarkston’s softball team more than made up for it at Monday’s Division 1 district.
The second-ranked Wolves blanked Lake Orion 8-0 in the semifinals and avenged Waterford Kettering, the same team that knocked Clarkston out last season, in a district final, 4-1, at Lake Orion High School.
In the finals, Clarkston (36-5) scored three in the third and added a run in the fifth for good measure.
Megan Hastings finished 2-for-4 to lead the Wolves, who have established a new school mark for wins in a season. Sydney Hasselbach was 2-for-3, belted a double and had an RBI and Candace Kitchen drove home a run and finished 1-for-3 for the Wolves.
Kettering plated its run in the second but had a hard time solving Clarkston’s Madeline Maday. A freshman, Maday went seven strong innings, giving up just one hit with four walks and 13 strikeouts for the Wolves, who amassed 12 hits in the contest.
Becca Neal was 1-for-3 and had the Captains’ sole RBI, where she knocked home Kim Jayson on a single.
In the district semifinal, Clarkston blanked Lake Orion, 9-0. The Dragons were the only team to defeat Clarkston in OAA Red Division play this season, as the Wolves finished 9-1 which included a split with Lake Orion.
Clarkston scored a run in the second, then broke the game open with seven more runs in the top half of the seventh inning to end the Dragons’ season at 20-16.
Clarkston amassed nine hits in the contest, while Lake Orion had five hits but booted three errors.
Maday was the pitcher of record, scattering five hits with five strikeouts against four walks. Lake Orion stranded nine baserunners.
Katie Nelson supplied two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs for Clarkston. Tara Perry finished 3-for-4 and scored a pair of runs and Rachel Vieira was 1-for-3 and had two more RBI for Clarkston. Hastings, Shauna Siwicki, Kitchen and Rachel Alli also drove in runs for the Wolves.
Julie Malear was 2-for-4 and Kennedi Thomas finished 1-for-3 and had a double for Lake Orion.
